Despite battling the coronavirus, President Donald Trump set out in his motorcade to greet supporters gathered outside Walter Reed Medical Center on Sunday.
Many videos were added to Twitter to show the president waving and driving by the large number of supporters.
Trump went to the medical center Friday amidst reports that he was experiencing symptoms related to his COVID-19 diagnosis earlier in the week.
On Sunday evening, Trump posted a video on Twitter expressing his appreciation.
“We are getting great reports from the doctors,” he says. “This is an incredible hospital. The work they do at Walter Reed Medical Center is amazing and I want to thank them all. I think we are also going to pay a little surprise to some of the great patriots we have out on the street.”
In the 73-second video, Trump says he “went to school” and learned a lot about COVID-19 while hospitalized.
“It has been a very interesting journey,” he says. “I have learned a lot about COVID-19. I learned it by really going to school. This isn’t the ‘let’s read the book’ school. I get it and I understand it. It is a very interesting thing and I am going to be letting you know about it.”
Trump Greets Supporters
A short time after posting the video, Trump took a ride in the back of an SUV and waving at the crowd. He was in the vehicle with two Secret Service members.
Deputy White House Press Secretary Judd Deere issued a statement on Sunday concerning the president’s decision.
“President Trump took a short, last-minute motorcade ride to wave to his supporters outside and has now returned to the Presidential Suite inside Walter Reed,” Deere said. “Appropriate precautions were taken in the execution of this movement to protect the president and all supporting it, including Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). The movement was cleared by the medical team as safe to do.”
Trump’s evening ride left a bad taste in the mouth of many, including Walter Reed’s medical personnel. The hospital’s Chief of Disaster Medicine, Dr. James Phillips, tweeted his objection to Trump’s action.
Trump has now been in the hospital for several days as he receives treatment for the coronavirus.
