It was Halloween COVID-19 pandemic style at the White House this weekend, as trick-or-treaters received sweets from the Trumps. This weekend’s festivities marked the fourth annual Halloween celebration thrown by the Trumps at the White House.

Families of frontline workers in addition to military personnel were among Halloween invites. The Trumps greeted ghosts, ghouls, dinosaurs as well as mini versions of themselves as the line of candy seekers rolled through the south lawn.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, extra precautions were taken at the White House this year, according to Fox News. Event organizers required face mask coverings, social distancing, and made hand sanitizer available along the way. Traditionally the Trumps hand candy directly to the children but this incorporated a no-touch policy. Instead, the president and first lady greeted and admired the costumes of trick-or-treaters from a distance.

“It was a pleasure to welcome all of the costumed trick-or-treaters frontline workers, military families, and schoolchildren this year for the annual Halloween festivities at the White House,” Melania Trump tweets.

White House Halloween Event Draws Criticism

Though both have recently recovered from COVID-19, neither of the Trumps appeared to be wearing masks at the event.

Despite the additional precautions taken by the Trump’s and White House Staff, some have been critical of their decision to host the event. Many took to social media to express their displeasure in hosting a get-together during the pandemic.

“I’m not virologist,” one user writes. “But hosting a Halloween Trick or Treat event for families and children at COVID Central (the White House) sounds like a really bad idea.”

Moreover, others called the event a potential “superspreader” and slammed the Trumps over other political situations.

“Hey I heard Trump and Melania are holding a Halloween Superspreader event today for children at the White House,” a Twitter user writes. “Maybe they should get busy finding the 545 children’s parents they kidnapped?”
