A Washington University student senator, Fadel Alkilani, was captured on camera this weekend removing nearly 3,000 miniature American flags from an on-campus 9/11 memorial. The miniature American flags are part of a Washington University memorial, honoring the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Since the release of the video, Alkilani claims the removal of the flags is part of his protest over “US wars that have killed 900,000 in the Middle East.”

The recording captures the student Saturday evening as he places the 2,977 miniature American flags he collected inside multiple blue trash bags after removing them from the memorial site.

The Memorial is part of the “9/11: Never Forget Project” memorial. Each flag commemorates a life lost in the 9/11 attacks.

Student Recorded Removing Flags From 9/11 Memorial

Another student attending the St. Louis Missouri university captured the video of Alkilani removing the symbolic miniature American flags from the memorial.

Nathanial Hope captured the video on the evening of the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the brief video, Hope, who serves as a member of the Washington University College Republicans approaches Alkilani. Recording him as the student carries multiple blue garbage bags full of the American flags he removed from the memorial.

“Who are you?” Alkilani asks Nathanial Hope in the video; as Hope records the student as he continues placing the 9/11 memorial flags inside the garbage bags.

In addition to capturing him removing the flags, Nathanial Hope later described Fadel Alkilani as showing “no remorse” towards removing the symbolic flags.

Hope later posted the video to the Young Americans for Freedom Twitter page. To which Alkilani later responded when confronted by the Young Americans for Freedom (YAF).

“I did not violate any university or legal policy,” the YAF reports the student said when questioned about the incident. “Now go away.”

The Washington University student admits that he had been protesting “against American imperialism and the 900,000 lives lost as a result of post 9/11 war,” when removing the 2,977 American flags.

Student Responds to Video and Accusations

Additionally, Fadel Alkilani made a statement on his Instagram page, sharing a post from Washington University’s own Instagram account.

“Republicans (are) attacking me in the replies,” Alkilani writes on the Instagram page. However, this page has since been deleted.

Alkilani another statement a few hours later. In the statement, the student claims to be the victim of a “massive harassment campaign propagated primarily by Washington University College Republicans and the Young American’s Foundation (YAF).”

However, the Washington University student went on to deny stealing 9/11 memorial flags. Claiming that there is a “large amount of misinformation circulating” regarding the event.
