Whole Foods CEO Blames Higher COVID Death Rates in U.S. on Americans Being Fatter

Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey believes the US is experiencing more deaths from COVID-19 due to obesity.

Mackey spoke to The New York Times on Thursday, stating that the United States has been hit harder by the novel coronavirus due to the country’s cases of heart disease and diabetes. Much of this is in relation to its citizens’ poor diets.

Mackey stated that the US has moved “in the wrong direction” in terms of approaching eating habits over the last 50 years.

“We’re getting fat, and we’re getting sicker,” he stated. “There’s a very high correlation between obesity and COVID deaths. And one of the reasons the United States has had more of a problem with COVID is simply that the comorbidities like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, they’re just higher in the US.”

The Whole Foods CEO believes that America is in this state due to ignorance, not an “access problem.”

“I don’t think there’s an access problem. I think there’s a market demand problem. People have got to become wiser about their food choices. And if people want different foods, the market will provide it,” he said.

Whole Foods is a chain that opts to provide a wide variety of nutritious meals. However, it’s unclear what Mackey is doing personally to resolve some of the obesity crisis he believes has contributed to the pandemic’s death rates.
