In a rare interview, First Lady Melania Trump addressed a wide range of topics, including faith that her husband, Donald Trump, would one day be president.

Speaking to British magazine Tatler, Melania recalled her thoughts when her husband announced he was thinking of running for office. Trump made the announcement live on the Larry King Show in 1999.

According to the New York Post, she told Tatler the couple did not believe the time was right. “We knew it wasn’t the time,” she said. “But I did know that if and when he ran, he would win.”

In excerpts obtained by the Daily Mail, Melania opened up on a variety of topics including her husband’s presidency, economics, and her career.

One area she is proud of is the administration’s commitment to attacking the country’s growing opioid epidemic. She said treating harmful addiction is important.

“We have to take away the stigma and shame that comes with addiction and treat it as an illness,” she says. “I am proud of the strides and results this administration has made, resulting in saved lives.”

She spoke on her economic stance, telling the magazine that “I can tell you that I believe in free market capitalism.”

Melania Trump Talks Childhood

Now 50, the first lady spoke about her youth and how it prepared her to become the country’s first lady.

“Growing up in Slovenia, living in both Milan and Paris at a young age. She ended up moving to the United States and living in New York City in my 20’s has led to my serving our great nation as First Lady.”

She was also quick to give credit to her upbringing for her current position and success.

“I grew up with a beautiful family and had a wonderful childhood,” she said. “My mother and father taught us the importance of education, hard work and family.”
