‘Wipeout’ Participant Dies in Hospital After Finishing Obstacle Course

Known for its family-friendly fun, an obstacle course turned deadly for one contestant. A participant on the obstacle-course game show “Wipeout” died after experiencing cardiac arrest.

According to TMZ, a contestant on the hit game show had to go to the hospital after finishing one of the show’s courses. Later the hospital announced that the male contestant died.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and our thoughts are with them at this time,” Endemol Shine North America said in a statement. Endemol Shine is the production company behind the show.

The show features contestants competing against each other on obstacle courses during several rounds. Production sources told the outlet that a contestant needed medical attention on the show’s set. The unnamed male contestant had competed in one of the show’s courses on Wednesday (Nov. 18). On-site emergency personnel tended to the man as they waited for paramedics to arrive.

The ‘Wipeout’ Contestant Experiences Cardiac Arrest

According to law enforcement, emergency sources received a call from the set of the show shortly before noon. The call reported that the contestant had gone into cardiac arrest after experiencing chest pains. On-set medics attempted to revive the contestant with defibrillators while waiting for emergency services.

According to the outlet, the show has safeguards and precautions to prevent potential accidents and deaths. Every contestant on the show is reportedly screened for any prior medical conditions. Additionally, the show employs two paramedics on the set. They also hired a safety producer and a paramedic coordinator in case of an emergency.

Originally, “Wipeout” aired on ABC from 2008 to 2014. Like many shows recently, the competition received a reboot and revival to air for 20 episodes on TBS. According to Cinemablend, John Cena and Nicole Byer will act as hosts for the show.

“We are devastated to have learned of his passing and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family,” TBS said in a statement.
