When thinking of a long, happy marriage and anniversaries, we may picture ourselves rocking on a porch swing beside our soul mate. Typically, we’re old, gray, wrinkly, and, perhaps, a little grumpy. Or at least, that’s what I’ve imagined. However, one dynamic couple just rang in their 59th wedding anniversary. However, they did not stay at home on the porch swing. In celebration of their milestone anniversary, Karen and Gary Ryan completely recreated their wedding. Karen even donned her original wedding dress for the photoshoot.
The couple, both of whom are aged 79, wedded on July 28th, 1962. In discussing their upcoming anniversary with their daughter-in-law, Karen happened to mention that her 1960s wedding dress was somewhere in the garage.
Their daughter-in-law, Nikki, said, “We were talking about their anniversary coming up and Karen said, ‘I think my wedding dress is in a box in the garage.”
From there, the grand celebration plans began.
Once the women located the dress, Karen tried it on. “I couldn’t believe it fit me perfectly,” she said. “It was in perfect condition.”
“It fit like a glove,” Nikki added. Soon after, the couple’s daughter-in-law, who happens to work as a wedding photographer with her daughter, suggested the special anniversary photoshoot.
“At first I was like ‘no way’,” Karen shared, “then the more I thought about it it sounded like fun.”
From there, Nikki received the go-ahead.
Anniversary Photos Capture a Special Day Relived
Karen and Gary’s photoshoot appeared as extravagant as their wedding. Karen shared with SWNS that the couple’s wedding ceremony boasted a collective five hundred people, alongside a wedding party of 10 plus a ring bearer and flower girl.
While the photoshoot did not host the 500 original guests, Nikki and her daughter were sure to make the elderly couple’s milestone anniversary as memorable as possible. Karen wore her original wedding attire while Gary donned a tuxedo very similar to the one from their wedding. Additionally, the photoshoot saw a collection of balloons, flowers, and a two-tier anniversary bundt cake.
As to the anniversary photoshoot, Karen shared, “It was a lot of fun because of who took the pictures.”
“I was totally surprised at how good it mirrored our pictures from 59 years ago, it’s neat to see them then and now,” Gary said.
After 59 years of marriage, Karen and Gary also lived and learned enough through their relationship to provide us with some helpful hints when it comes to a successful relationship.
Karen shared that her best advice simply consists of, “never go to bed angry, [and] always kiss and make-up.”
As for Gary, he shared, “We all have problems[,] just help each other and be there for one another always.”
We’ll do our best, Mr. and Mrs. Ryan.
