A harmless prank turned deadly when a woman in Naucalpan de Juarez, Mexico was reportedly shot dead while trying to scare her neighbors as she was dressed as a ghost.

According to The Sun, the unidentified woman was seen roaming the streets while dressed as a ghost. She was wearing a white gown and veil. This was to reportedly look like the Weeping Woman, known as La Llorona. The witnesses in the area recall seeing the ghost figure walking around the streets on October 15h. She was also shouting “Ay mis hijos” which means “oh my children.”

Local reports on the incident reveal the spooked shooter fired at the ghost costume-clad woman and then fled the scene. Law enforcement has not revealed the woman’s identity and no arrests have been reported in connection to the incident.

The Story Behind the Ghost of ‘La Llorona’

According to Legends of America, the legend of La Llorona is pretty fascinating. The ghost’s name in Spanish means “Weeping Woman.” The tale has notably been a part of Hispanic culture in the southwest since the conquistadors’ days.

La Llorona is reportedly seen as a tall, thin ghost that is said to be “blessed with natural beauty and long flowing black hair.” She is also wearing a white gown. She roams rivers and creeks wailing and searching for children to drag to watery graves.

Although the story of the ghost of La Llorona is quite sad, no one really knows where the legend originated from or when it actually began. But one of the tales reveals that before she became a ghost says she was born to a peasant family. She notably spent her days in her “humble” peasant surroundings. But she would be seen wearing a white gown in the evenings. However, she had two young sons, which made it difficult for her to spend evenings out having fun. She eventually left her sons alone and one day, they drowned in a nearby river.

Another Tale About of La Llorona

However, another story about La Llorona says she was a caring woman who married a wealthy man who gave her gifts and attention. But, after she gave him two sons, her husband changed. He notably went back to womanizing and drinking alcohol. He would constantly leave hr for months at a time. One evening, upon seeing her husband with another woman, she became enraged and threw her sons into the river. Upon watching her sons drift down the river, she realized what she had done and attempted to save them. But failed.

The ghost of La Llorona has been a subject of various films throughout the years. This includes The Curse of La Llorona; The Legend of Llorona; La Llorona; and La Leyenda de la Llorona.
