‘1883’: Faith Hill Says She ‘Gained So Much Respect for Cowboys’ Filming ‘Yellowstone’ Prequel

by Jon D. B.

By her own words, Faith Hill’s highly-anticipated role as Margaret Dutton in Yellowstone prequel 1883 led to the megastar experiencing a whole new way of life.

It’s been a whirlwind of a Friday for Yellowstone fans. Entertainment Weekly just dropped their exclusive first-look into the prequel series, 1883, bringing a slew of new information (and quotes about Faith Hill “dropping trou”) to the forefront. Both bombshells are related, too, as the period epic has been filming with a style of guerilla “gritty realism,” series creator Taylor Sheridan tells the trade.

And through this, Faith Hill – one of country music’s most prolific stars for decades – has gained a whole new appreciation for the American cowboy.

Her first order of business? Learning to ride a horse Western style in a corset. “Although it looks amazing, it’s terrible,” she tells EW. “I think I have a few ribs floating around in my body.”

Hill is humbled by 1883‘s faith to that era (pun intended), too. “This is real work. I was raised by Edna Earl and Ted Perry, and they believed the best way to teach a child was to get your hands in the dirt,” she continues. “That’s basically this in a nutshell.”

The icon also credits 1883′s qualities – which Yellowstone fans have yet to experience – directly to this world’s creator. “I think so many actors are drawn to Taylor’s writing because he is portraying the story in a way that was lived. I gained so much respect for cowboys,” she cites.

An exceptionally hard worker herself, this will still no-doubt be music to many ‘a cowboys’ ears.

‘1883’ Leads to Many ‘Firsts’ for Faith Hill

But don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere before elaborating on that “dropping trou” statement for you. To fully understand the quote, however, it’s imperative to understand that 1883 is filming out in the thick of it. Truly.

As Texans will tell you, the state is still much as their ancestors left it in the 19th century. Livestock grazes endless vistas without a lieu in sight. And this is exactly where much of 1883 filmed the Texas-based portion of their narrative.

In short: if an actor had to take a trip to the restroom – they learned how to do so in the wilds real quick. Faith Hill confesses she was one such trooper whilst bringing life to Margaret Dutton.

“You learn how to pick a tree, squat down, and do your business,” Hill says without missing a beat. She admits she’s now “quite comfortable” with the cast and crew of 1883 – and was after only a few days of shooting. It was the only way to make it work, she says. Consider our expectations raised.

Those expectations are high to begin with, too. As Faith Hill cites: “That’s why so many actors are drawn to Taylor’s writing… He is portraying the story in a way that was lived.”

1883 launches Dec. 19 on Paramount+.
