“Yellowstone” fans are buzzing with the news that a new spin-off series will be hitting Paramount+ soon. Not to mention the fact that it’ll feature Oscar nominee Sam Elliott and country stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.
“1883” will focus on the Dutton family ancestors who trek across America to get to Montana. Their tour guide? None other than rough and gruff cowboy Sam Elliott, who plays Shea Brennan. According to an official press release, Brennan is a “tough as nails, handsome cowboy with immense sadness in his past” who “does not suffer fools.”
McGraw and Hill will play James and Margaret Dutton, the original matriarch and patriarch of the “Yellowstone” family we know today. But just how are James and Margaret related to Kevin Costner’s John Dutton?
According to “Yellowstone” star Brecken Merrill, James and Margaret are John Dutton’s “great-grandparents.” The actor who plays Tate Dutton in the hit Western recently posted a photo of the casting announcement on Instagram. He captioned it, “Tate’s great-great-grandpa and grandma!”
So, if you believe Merrill, that would make McGraw and Hill Costner’s great-grandparents. It’ll be interesting to see how the Dutton family make their start in the Great Plains, and what kind of relationship they build with Elliott’s Shea Brennan.
What Do ‘Yellowstone’ Execs Have to Say About ‘1883?’
CBS and MTV Entertainment Group teamed up to create the Paramount+ streaming service. Earlier this week, MTV President/CEO Chris McCarthy shared his thoughts on the upcoming “Yellowstone” spin-off series in a press release.
“‘Yellowstone’ is a massive hit show with tens of millions of fans. With ‘1883,’ we are taking those fans back to the origin story. And in the process, turning the ‘Yellowstone’ world into a global hit franchise to fuel the growth of Paramount+,” McCarthy said. “We are thrilled to have Sam, Tim, and Faith as the stars of Taylor Sheridan’s new series exclusively for Paramount+ around the world.”
101Studios produces “Yellowstone” and will produce “1883” eventually. Earlier, CEO David Glasser spoke up about the casting news in the same press release as McCarthy.
“We are thrilled to have Academy Award nominee and acting legend Sam and hugely talented, award-winning artists Faith and Tim all join the Taylor Sheridan universe,” Glasser said. “Taylor’s proven his immense capability of creating captivating characters and immersive worlds. And there’s no exception here with ‘1883’ and Sam, Faith, and Tim’s characters. We are looking forward to this further expansion of the world of Yellowstone and bringing it to audiences everywhere.”
There’s no official release date yet. But word on the street is that filming has started or soon will start in Texas. Now’s the time to catch up on “Yellowstone” and all your favorite characters before the spin-off premieres.
