Before actor Eric Nelsen landed a role on “1883,” the star was a huge fan of “Yellowstone.” Along with his entire family, Nelsen binged the Taylor Sheridan creation during the pandemic. So when he got a manuscript describing “1883,” the actor and producer says his family warned him to ‘not blow it.’

Speaking in a recent interview with C&I Magazine, Nelsen talks about coming across the project. He says it didn’t take him long to find Sheridan’s name attached.

“First and foremost, my family and I were huge fans of ‘Yellowstone.‘ During the pandemic, my whole family caught up and watched it from A to Z. And so when this came across my desk and I saw Taylor’s name on it, it didn’t necessarily give away that it was the prequel to ‘Yellowstone,’ but it did say it was Taylor’s project and it was ‘1883’ and it was a western so right then I was hooked and I knew I had to do whatever I had to do to get this job.”

Nelsen Says Project Immediately Intrigued Him

Nelsen goes on to say:

“I just loved his work so much and it didn’t take long to piece it together that it was a prequel to ‘Yellowstone.’ And then that added a whole other element of ‘oh my gosh, please don’t mess this up for yourself.’ This was the one that if I were to ever pick a project for myself – and I’ve been doing this 17 years – and I can wholeheartedly say that my entire family – and there’s a lot of us – is a fan of ‘Yellowstone,’ so I knew they’d be fans of ‘1883’.”

The western star also said he’s super excited that the drama series will bring his family together. Nelsen explains that he’s just excited to be working with the other actors and Sheridan.

Interestingly, Nelsen moved to Fort Worth just months before he got the role. So he didn’t have to leave the area once filming began, which was a major plus for the star.

Further, Nelsen plays the role of rebel cowboy Ennis opposite James and Margaret Dutton. He’s also excited to be working with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill for the drama series.

“1883” Creator Taylor Sheridan Discusses Project Being ‘Earned’

Additionally, the Taylor Sheridan prequel has a huge fanbase thanks to the wildly popular “Yellowstone.” But Sheridan says he earned this by being completely authentic and throwing away preconceived notions about filming. He also cited “True Detective” director Cary Joji Fukunaga for paving the way for that type of project.

“What Cary did, I am doing,” Sheridan said. “Write 10-hour movies and go shoot them. I’ve been working with the same crew since Wind River and we have such a shorthand. It’s still challenging, because everything I shoot takes place outside for the most part and we’re beholden to the weather and have to force our way through. But at the end of the day, to go to some of these locations where most people have never been, where you’re opening up a new world, and all of these places or characters in the story, to me, it’s fascinating.”
