‘1883’ Star Tim McGraw Describes Hilarious Scene That Hit Too Close to Home

by Jon D. B.

“There was 25 years of pent-up aggression going on!” 1883‘s Tim McGraw faced the wrath of his wife, Faith Hill, while filming the Yellowstone prequel.

As country fans know, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have been married for more than two decades. They’re as much a power couple as power couples come. Yellowstone‘s first spinoff, 1883, however, is set to take them to a whole new level.

“It’s been incredible to do scenes together and to watch her work,” McGraw tells PEOPLE of Hill’s work on Paramount’s Western. But that work sometimes has the couple squaring off, something Tim would soon find leading to some “pent-up aggression” from Faith.

“We had this scene where she has to slap me. I was expecting a finger slap but it was a paw to the jaw,” McGraw reveals.

“There was 25 years of pent-up aggression going on!” he jokes. But when audiences see it on screen in 1883, the icon says, “you realize it was a genuine hit.”

Hill: 1 – McGraw: 0.

Tim McGraw is Bringing His A-Game for ‘1883’

While Hill may be able to channel some inner-rage towards her husband into her Margaret Dutton, McGraw is obviously having to find other ways to do so.

His beard may be the most apparent way. McGraw has rarely, if ever, sported a full beard during his career. But the facial hair he’s managed to manifest for 1883 is nothing short of spectacular. One of the best shots showcasing said whiskers comes courtesy of McGraw’s official Twitter. There, the country music icon and actor gave fans a glimpse of “Another Day of work at #1883TV” recently. And it does not disappoint.

But whichever 1883 photographer is responsible for the shot went the extra mile here. The photo McGraw includes is a dead ringer for 19th-century Western photography, known as daguerreotype photography.

This laborious form of picture taking used an iodine-sensitized silvered plate alongside mercury vapor. The resulting images were stark, deeply contrasted snapshots of life. They remain haunting to this day; something the photo of McGraw as James Dutton captures perfectly.

But Who is James Dutton?

As Yellowstone fans know, Tim McGraw is set to play James Dutton. But who is this man at the center of 1883?

McGraw’s character is this prequel’s patriarch, much like Kevin Costner’s John Dutton. In fact, he is the direct ancestor of Yellowstone’s John and Dutton clan. Courtesy of 1883, we will discover how the 19th-century Duttons founded Yellowstone Ranch in Montana.

This is 1883 in a nutshell; a period-correct Western that fans of Yellowstone will be watching come December 19. And the more we see of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill in character, the more we’re sold.
