It’s “Just four more Sundays until 1883 premieres on Paramount Plus!” and this latest official shot of Tim McGraw as James Dutton has Outsider pumped.

It’s no secret that Tim McGraw is a superstar. Despite ruling the country music scene for over three decades, however, his acting experience is limited. So when Taylor Sheridan’s crew decided to cast McGraw and real-life-wife Faith Hill as his leading Duttons for 1883, Outsider was admittedly perplexed.

Will country’s royal couple be able to pull another Yellowstone smash hit out of Sheridan’s cowboy hat? Is limited acting experience enough to justify placing these two at the heart of a hard-hitting period Western?

Thankfully, the more we see the more we’re sold on McGraw & Hill in their roles. Both possess talent in heaps, and it shines in 1883‘s official trailer. Seeing the couple in character, too, has erased any doubt that Sheridan has once again made the right decision.

McGraw typically sports a bit of facial hair, but watching him manifest a gloriously-full beard for James Dutton has been nothing short of magnificent. Combine it with the top-notch costume design for 1883, and we’ve got the recipe for a Western epic for the ages. Well, at least where this leading man is concerned.

‘1883’ is Set to Fulfill Every ‘Yellowstone’ Fan’s Western Dreams

From what we know about the show so far, the shot above looks to take place in the early Texas-based days of the show. The Duttons will start their perilous journey in the Lone Star State. From there, James and Margaret Dutton will take their children west (or northwest, more aptly) to Montana. There, they’ll eventually found the Dutton’s Yellowstone Ranch we know and love.

The resulting period-correct Western will retell America’s great Westward Expansion through the eyes of this iconic fictional family. And audiences will finally see the ancestors of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton claim that land as their own.

At this point, we know quite a bit about this journey, too. Paramount Network’s plot synopsis states that 1883 will follow McGraw and Hill’s characters as they “embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America.”

But perhaps most exciting of all is the addition of Sam Elliott to the Yellowstone franchise. The Western icon will give life to a Pinkerton Agent tasked with guiding these wayward Texans to a “better life” out West. Early reports had the 19th-century Duttons fleeing poverty to chase the American dream as part of the Westward Expansion. This will form the heart of 1883 – alongside a “true to life” portrayal of the Native American populations at the time.

In short: this is the spinoff Yellowstone fans have been waiting for. It’s a damn good time to be an Outsider, indeed. And we can’t wait for the first episode of 1883 come December 19.
