Yellowstone fans finally got their first glimpse of the highly-anticipated spin-off, 1883, on Sunday night. And it didn’t disappoint.

John Dutton didn’t just magically come to own Yellowstone Ranch one day. Long before that, his ancestor, James Dutton, risked it all to move his family out west. That is the story that creator Taylor Sheridan is telling in 1883. And yes, Sheridan is also the creator of Paramount Network’s hit show, Yellowstone.

Now, you may be wondering how exactly the idea for 1883 came to be. Well, lucky for us, Sheridan shared some of his thoughts in an interview on the official 1883 Instagram page. He says that he wanted to write it “like a novel.”

“When all of the pieces of my brain came together for 1883, I decided to write it like a novel,” Sheridan says in the clip. “And then just film the novel.”

And judging by the first episode, this show is going to be very much like watching a great book unfold right before our eyes. If you are interested in reading Outsider’s official recap of the season premiere, you can view that here.

‘Yellowstone’ Spin-Off Isn’t Short on Star Power

If you didn’t already know, 1883 features a star-studded cast. That list of actors includes the likes of Sam Elliott who will be playing cowboy Shea Brennan, and even country music stars Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. They will star in the show as two of the main characters, James and Margaret Dutton.

“The audience is going to get very connected to these characters,” Sheridan admits. “I can’t say much more than that.”

Fans React to Episode 1 of ‘1883’

It goes without saying that just about everyone was super excited to see the premiere of 1883. After getting so invested in Yellowstone, a spin-off prequel to the show made perfect sense.

“Amazing! Can’t wait for the next episode,” one fan commented.

“Excellent series so far! Writing and acting are very top notch! Thank you,” said another fan.

“What an excellent show,” a third person chimed in. “The storyline flows well, the characters are great, and Taylor Sheridan could actually continue the Dutton family story all the way through the 1900s till the last John Dutton is a young man. So much potential here for great TV.”

We can only hope that Sheridan has those kinds of plans for the world of Yellowstone that he has created. Need more Yellowstone or 1883 content in your life? You’re in the right place. Keep reading right here on Outsider.
