‘1883’ Star Tim McGraw Opens Up About ‘Struggle’ with Alcoholism

“Yellowstone” fans are eagerly awaiting the debut of the show’s first spinoff “1883” which will arrive in under two weeks.

The “Yellowstone” prequel will premiere its very first episode on December 19 and fans of the modern western cant wait. “1883” will tell the story of how the Dutton family came to settle in Montana. It will also give us the origins of how the “Yellowstone” Ranch became one of the largest cattle ranches in the country.

The show will have an all-star cast highlighted by western favorite Sam Elliott and Hollywood star Billy Bob Thornton. Earlier this year, “Yellowstone” and “1883” creator Taylor Sheridan made an unusual cast leading selection. Sheridan tabbed country music power couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill to head up the “1883” cast. It was a decision that drew a lot of attention as neither country singer has a wealth of acting experience.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the “1883” stars open up about a number of things including their filming experiences. Tim McGraw also discusses his battle with alcoholism and the effects it has on his life and marriage. Unsurprisingly, it was his wife that Tim McGraw turned to for support in fighting the deadly disease. McGraw faced off against his demons 13 years ago with the love and support of Hill. He says he still struggles with it now and likely will for the rest of his life.

“It’s always a struggle. It’s never not a struggle,” The “1883” star and award-winning country music singer says. “Those demons always come back. But you always have a partner that’s willing to fight them with you. We made a commitment to each other a long time ago that we’re not going to give up. It’s too easy to give up.”

Faith Hill has stuck with her husband through thick and thin with great devotion. She says dedication to each other is the key to their marriage.

“When you love someone, you commit to be there for them for the highs, the lows, anytime,” Hill says. “You face the struggles.”

Great words from both McGraw and Hill that can be applied to most every marriage.

Despite their many years together, “1883” is the first acting project for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. They will be portraying James and Margaret Dutton on the show.

We got our first taste of “1883” in the first “Yellowstone” episode of the fourth season. The flashback scene also gives us our first look at Tim McGraw as James Dutton, the direct ancestor of current “Yellowstone” Ranch owner John Dutton.

From what little we have seen on “1883” it looks as if the ongoing battle between the Dutton family in the Broken Rock Native American Tribe will be a big focus of the show.
