‘1883’: What Does New Cast Announcement Tell Us About the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Series?

by John Jamison

If you Outsiders are anything like us, you’ve been completely hooked by the brief moments of 1883 shown during Yellowstone episodes. Needless to say, we’re following the developing series closely. And the show delivered some huge casting news today. 1883 announced the show’s entire cast. What do the new additions mean for the direction of the upcoming Taylor Sheridan series?

Well, it’s safe to say the overall direction of 1883 is west. The show finds the ancestors of the Dutton family we all know and love traveling westward across the Great Plains by way of covered wagon. We’ve known for a while that our main cast of characters consists primarily of Tim McGraw as James Dutton. Faith Hill plays his wife, Margaret. And Sam Elliott portrays Shea Brennan.

But the recently announced cast additions from Deadline can tell us a whole lot more about what to expect from 1883. For starters, the inclusion of Emma Malouff and Dawn Olivieri as Claire and Mary Abel confirms that the extended Dutton family is traveling west alongside James and Margaret’s family.

Further, the makeup of the rest of their company gives us reason to expect plenty of conflict due to differing backgrounds. Marc Rissman and Anna Fiomora play Josa and Risa. They’re a European immigrant couple seeking better fortunes in America.

However, Nichole Galicia and Stephanie Nur will portray Guinivere and Melodi, prostitutes local to Fort Worth. Their presence should provide some interesting contrast to the family-oriented nature of our main characters.

‘1883’ Set for Mid-December Release Date

That’s right, Outsiders. 1883 is dropping just in time for Christmas. Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel series is set to premiere on Sunday, December 19.

In case you missed the minute-long teaser trailer Paramount+ dropped during the Yellowstone Season 4 premiere, check out the video below.

Sam Elliott’s Shea Brennan was featured heavily in the trailer. And that doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering the Academy Award-nominated actor plays a character tasked with leading the Dutton’s group to Montana.

Elliott, for one, was more than willing to praise 1883 creator Taylor Sheridan as a talented writer. And Yellowstone fans would have to agree.

“It all starts with the writing, and Taylor Sheridan is a brilliant writer. I think the western genre speaks clearly to both of us. The classic struggles of man against man, man against nature, and man against himself. It’s all there, in 1883. And I’m honored to be a part of it,” Elliott said in a statement after he was announced as a cast addition.

The upcoming prequel series differs from Yellowstone Season 4, though, in that it will reportedly only be available on Paramount+. The service is currently priced at $9.99/month for commercial-free entertainment. You know, in case you’re looking for an easy Christmas gift idea.
