News broke on Aug. 4 that country stars—and 25-year power couple—Tim McGraw and Faith Hill will once again join forces on a project. No, not another co-headlining tour. Nope, not another duet. Uh-uh, not another collaborative album. In addition to their standalone stardom, Tim and Faith have been crushing it together for years, including three tours, two Grammy Awards, and one chart-topping duets album.
Here’s the news in case you’ve been living off the grid the last week: Tim and Faith will be co-starring in 1883, Taylor Sheridan’s upcoming prequel to Yellowstone. That ain’t small potatoes. 1883 is television’s most anticipated new series. It was important enough to warrant a tease during the Super Bowl.
Tim and Faith are set to portray James and Margaret Dutton, respectively. 1883 follows the Dutton patriarch and matriarch “as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It is a stark retelling of Western expansion, and an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land—Montana.”
Can Tim and Faith score another hit together with 1883?
Cowboy Up in ‘1883’
Of course, it was also announced that Sam Elliott has a major role in 1883 as Shea Brennan, a seasoned cowboy leading the group from Texas to Montana. That’s sure to take some pressure off of Tim and Faith’s acting chops having to carry the series on their own. And I’m not saying they can’t. But if history has taught us anything about country stars crossing over to film and television, the failure rate is higher than the success rate. No need to name names, right? You’ve seen bad acting, and you’ve seen good acting.
However, Tim and Faith aren’t thespian newbies.
From drama to comedy, check out Tim McGraw’s turns as Charles Billingsley in Friday Night Lights, Dallas McVie in Four Christmases, and Sean Tuohy in The Blind Side, among others. Tim can act. While Faith doesn’t have Tim’s big-screen resume, she more than holds her own as Arletta in 2015’s Dixieland. Faith has also worked behinds the scenes in TV as an executive producer.
All of that bodes well for 1883.
Tim & Faith Prediction
“This is truly a dream job,” said Tim McGraw in a press release. “Taylor has found a way of storytelling that brilliantly creates these epic dramas and family sagas with so much depth and creativity. The Duttons are tremendous characters and it’s so thrilling to be able to bring them to life. As a kid growing up riding horses, you think about dream jobs like this and I am just so excited to work with this amazing cast and crew.”
“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” added Faith Hill. “The Duttons are a formidable family and it is an absolute dream to bring such a strong female character like Margaret Dutton to life. I am humbled and honored to work with Taylor and his entire team.”
If you’re worried about Tim and Faith carrying 1883, don’t be.
Taylor Sheridan doesn’t fail as an actor, writer, director, or producer. At least not that I’ve seen: Sons of Anarchy, Hell or High Water, Wind River, Yellowstone. Taylor’s track record is impeccable. He wouldn’t have cast Tim and Faith in such big roles if he didn’t have supreme faith in their acting abilities. On top of that, Tim and Faith don’t have reputations as artists who half-ass projects. Expect both to fully commit to their roles.
