“Yellowstone” Season 4’s Episode 6 has an intriguing title, and it hints at some heartwarming possibilities for young Carter (Finn Little).
The episode, which is titled, “I Want to Be Him,” sounds like it may include some scenes in which Carter looks up to Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Could John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) gruff enforcer become a mentor to the kid?
“Yellowstone” audiences haven’t met Carter yet, but we already know he’s a tough youth who smokes cigarettes, carries a knife and arrives on the Dutton Ranch with few other options but to become a cowboy. In that sense, he’s not so different from the young Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein) who showed up in the Dutton’s barn covered in dirt and blood.
Will Rip take a shine to Carter and school him in the ways of a ranch foreman? Who else but Rip could Carter be looking up to?
Despite His Rough Ways, Finn Little’s Carter Is an Innocent
Little’s character is young and impressionable and needs to look up to someone. Compared to the characters the Duttons have gone up against – in fact, even compared to the characters on the ranch – Carter is a naif, regardless of his tough appearance.
In a behind-the-scenes featurette on Carter posted recently to the “Yellowstone” Instagram account, Little’s co-stars talked about his performance as well as the character of Carter.
“He’s not quite the crushed soul that Jimmy was when he came,” Lloyd actor Forrie J. Smith said of Carter. “He’s more of an innocent, open slate.”
Hauser also had a few things to say about Little, suggesting that the two actors worked together quite a bit in Season 4.
“Finn is great,” Hauser said. “I mean, he’s a natural, the kid. It doesn’t start easy for him. You know, it’s a tough trek.”

‘Yellowstone’ Star Teased ‘Wonderful’ New Relationship for Rip
Adding fuel to speculation that Rip will take Carter under his wing are recent comments from Hauser himself. In an interview with Cowboys & Indians this month, Hauser teased a “wonderful” new relationship for Rip.
“There’s a wonderful relationship — which I won’t give away — with Beth and I that comes into our life,” Hauser said. “And again, it shows another side of not only Rip, but also Beth, and also John Dutton. So, it’s another excellent year of storytelling by Taylor Sheridan, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the audience thinks.”
What kind of wonderful new relationship could Rip have? We know there are four major new additions to the cast in Season 4. Jacki Weaver plays Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner. Kathryn Kelly plays a vet tech who becomes involved with someone on the Dutton Ranch. Piper Perabo plays a Portland protester who objects to industrialized farming and animal slaughter. And Little plays Carter.
Of those four characters, Carter seems the obvious choice for a relationship with Rip. And from Hauser’s comments, it sounds like that wonderful relationship also includes Beth (Kelly Reilly). Who could be better adoptive parents and role models for Carter than Rip and Beth?
“Yellowstone” fans will be watching the new season with fingers crossed that Carter finds in Rip the protector and mentor he needs. But time will tell if that’s the case. Season 4 premieres on Sunday, Nov. 7, exclusively on the Paramount Network. Don’t miss it.
