On Yellowstone, actor Jefferson White plays Jimmy Hurdstrom. Jimmy is a neophyte on the Dutton Ranch who’s somewhat reluctantly learning to be a cowboy.
In real life, White knew little about cowboying before starting on the show. The Iowa native had to attend Taylor Sheridan’s special boot camp for cast members, referred to as Cowboy Camp. And while Jimmy isn’t much of a cowboy, White appears to have taken to the lifestyle like a duck to water.
In a recent interview with Outsider, White drew parallels between Jimmy’s learning process in his adopted vocation as a cowboy and White’s own learning process as an actor. White was reportedly a theater kid in his native Iowa. But he says he’s grown significantly as an actor as he’s worked with some of the best performers in the world on Yellowstone.
Jefferson White Reflects on Learning from Kevin Costner
“It’s incredible. It’s the gift of a lifetime,” White said of working with Costner and the rest of the cast. “And no matter what happens to Jimmy, maybe Jimmy falls off and doesn’t get back up, we don’t know what’s going to happen to him. No matter what, like the experience of working on this show, the experience of working with Kevin, those are lessons that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
White added that he still has a lot to learn as an actor. Fortunately for him, he’s surrounded by top-shelf talent, and he also seems to genuinely like his co-stars.
“You know, in the same way that Jimmy’s learning how to ride from Rip, learning how to sort of navigate this world, I’m learning how to be an actor,” White explained. “I’m learning how to survive as an actor in a strange place, in a new world, from the best in the world. In the same way, we’re surrounded by the best horse trainers and stunt performers. We’re also surrounded by the best actors in the world.”

White Is Hosting the Official Yellowstone Podcast
The Yellowstone star is majorly invested in the success of the Yellowstone franchise, professionally and emotionally. In fact, as if to underscore his enthusiasm for all things Yellowstone, White is hosting the official behind-the-scenes Yellowstone podcast. It premiered this month.
White plans to speak with a different cast member in each episode of the podcast. Their conversations will take listeners behind the scenes of the hit Paramount Network series. And they’ll offer trivia and gossip no one else can share.
“This isn’t just your typical recap show,” White said in the podcast trailer. “We are going to unpack the world of Yellowstone. Everything from rodeo to ranching to reservation. This is about getting the full picture of the culture and the community that surround the show.”
And who better to unpack it than White? He is still appearing on Yellowstone, albeit from Texas, after Jimmy did indeed survive his fall. Until the spinoff 6666 (in which White will star) premieres, you can catch White, Costner and their castmates together on Yellowstone. It airs Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network.
