Sam Elliott Says Story Like ‘1883’ Has ‘Never Been Done’ Before

Through the first couple of weeks of the premiere season of 1883 fans have been treated to a western genre series that is much different than others before it.

Not only does the show have a cast unlike any other, but it also has a story and writing that make it unlike any other. Already, the star of the show Sam Elliott has talked multiple times about the unique series. Elliott doesn’t like being typecast as a cowboy. But this was different.

In the past, Elliott said that the reason he joined the show was due to the script. He wasn’t sold until he read what Taylor Sheridan had written. He hasn’t even watched Yellowstone. So, he came into the project with just the raw product to go off of. He talked about that great story Sheridan has put together in an Instagram video.

“It’s a tale that’s been told. It’s a tale we’re all familiar with, the Oregon Trail,” the 1883 actor says. “But it’s never been done like Taylor’s done it on the page.”

Every time one of the cast members talks about the show it seems that they say how unique and different it is. From the cowboy culture to the clothes, and down to the writing. 1883 has the accuracy down and is proud to show that off.

How Shea Brennan Differs From Other Cowboys in Elliott’s Career

When it comes to all of the cowboys that Sam Elliott has played, Shea Brennan is different. Elliott has played a lot of cowboys. From western movies and shows to non-westerns movies. It seems that he almost always has a western slant to his roles.

It is for that reason that Elliott doesn’t like to take too many cowboy roles. However, this was different. When he read for the part, it became clear that this was not just any other cowboy character.

“I played these kinds of characters before,” Elliott explained. “But there’s a lot more going on in Shea’s head than there have been in other cowboys that I’ve played.” He went into more detail, “Number one, he’s a veteran of the Civil War. Number two, he loses his family right off the top in the first episode, and number three, he’s got this contingent of immigrants that he’s taken care of showing them the way guarding along the way, and he’s sensitive to those losses.”

‘1883’ Isn’t Like Other Shows

It is clear that 1883 was made to be something unique. Even if Yellowstone didn’t exist, this show could stand on its own. The prequel/origin story does have that connection to the Dutton’s of the present, but viewers don’t have to have seen the original series to follow what’s going on.

The western genre seems to be gaining popularity. Taylor Sheridan clearly wants to stand out and have his shows stand out among the rest.
