Yellowstone fans know that Jimmy (Jefferson White) has said some stupid things during his time at the Dutton Ranch, but he has never disrespected John Dutton (Kevin Costner). And that’s lucky for White, because the actor holds Oscar winner Costner in high regard and wouldn’t want to land on his bad side, in front of the cameras or away from them.
In a new interview with Looper, White admitted that he is “a little bit afraid” of Costner, as Jimmy is of John Dutton, and explained why.
“Jimmy’s relationship to John Dutton is exactly like my relationship to Kevin Costner,” White said. “Jimmy looks up to John, and he’s constantly trying to learn from him. He has tremendous respect for him, yet he is a little bit afraid of him. And that’s exactly how I feel about Kevin. He’s the nicest guy in the world. He’s much nicer and kinder than John Dutton, but I still can’t help but be a little bit of afraid of him all the time. I mean, he’s a legend and a genius.”
Yellowstone Star and EP Is a Force Behind the Scenes
White added that Costner – who not only stars in Yellowstone but also executive produces – is the heart of the show, and he’s “really muscling it forward in such an impressive way.”
But while Costner is a central player both onscreen and behind the scenes, White also acknowledged that the strength of Yellowstone lies in its ensemble cast. The show is really a team effort, and White could not say enough positive things about the team that series co-creator Taylor Sheridan has assembled.
“We’re so lucky to have such a rich and full ensemble cast, and I think that speaks to Taylor Sheridan attracting the best actors in the world — he just attracts amazing artists and good people to his projects, which is an incredible gift,” White explained. “And really, in a lot of ways, that’s responsible for so much of what makes the show work as a whole.”
Will Jimmy Appear in Season 5?
With White slated to appear in the Yellowstone spinoff 6666, but no word yet on the latter show’s premiere date, it’s an open question whether White will still be a part of Yellowstone in Season 5.
When Season 4 left off, John had told Jimmy that Jimmy owed him nothing and was free to go. And so Jimmy went, his fiancée (Kathryn Kelly) in tow, back to the Four Sixes. It was an easy choice for Jimmy, who endured hazing and a grueling learning curve at the Dutton Ranch. While work at the Four Sixes is no less grueling, Jimmy is his own man there, and people treat him with courtesy.
Moreover, Jimmy knows that at the Dutton Ranch, he’d constantly be fighting – for the ranch, for his job, for respect. And he doesn’t want to be a fighter anymore. So, in the Season 4 finale, Jimmy said his goodbyes to Montana.
But whether White appears in the next season of Yellowstone or not, he will no doubt always treasure the memories of working with Costner, who he has referred to as “The Boss.”
