Western fans and television audiences worldwide have fallen for Paramount’s modern spin on the genre thanks to a brilliant cast, outstanding writing, and Hollywood-level production value. So what’s the only thing that could possibly make Yellowstone better?
What if we could follow the Dutton family through a true Western setting? What if the Yellowstone brand encapsulated a period-drama- capitalizing on all the phenomenal stories our American ancestors lived through the Wild West?
We’re about to find out. Today’s huge announcement of Y: 1883 means we’re getting the Yellowstone spinoff we’ve always wanted – and we now have a plot synopsis to shed some light on where it’s headed.
Yellowstone: 1883 Will Follow The Duttons into the Wild West
“I don’t care if you live or die. But should you live, you tell them about me…”
So says the ominous voiceover in the teaser for Friday’s Y:1883 teaser. It gives us an immediate glimpse into the tone of the Yellowstone prequel, which you can view below.
Even more revealing, however, is the show’s official synopsis. Within, we’re told that 1883 will follow the ancestors of John Dutton and his children “as they embark on a journey west through the Great Plains towards the last bastion of untamed America.”
In doing so, Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan promises “a stark retelling of Western expansion.” Music to any fan’s ears. Moreover, 1883 will serve as “an intense study of one family fleeing poverty to seek a better future in America’s promised land – Montana.”
Sounds like the Duttons have always been fighters. Are we surprised? Of course not. But we’re damn excited.
Additionally, the news of the Duttons making their way to Montana is doubly thrilling. As such, we will be treated to both the origins of our favorite family – and their Yellowstone Ranch we know so well.
Will Y:1883 Continue to Showcase Native American History?
Fans of Yellowstone will know, too, that there is no Yellowstone without the indigenous peoples of North America. Showrunner & co-creator Taylor Sheridan has made sure that the history, plight, and triumphs of Native Americans is a proper focus of his series. Sheridan pulls from real-life relationships, experiences, and friendships to make this happen.
All of this considered, we’re sure to see the first clash between the Dutton settlers and the indigenous inhabitants of Montana. Just when we thought it wasn’t possible to get any more excited…
There’s no show on television, streaming or cable, that fits this description. For Outsider’s money, we’re betting on Y:1883 being the triumphant return of true Hollywood Westerns.
And we can’t wait. Check out the teaser below:
