A sneaky reference made by “Yellowstone” creator Taylor Sheridan in the most recent episode did not go unnoticed by fans.

Sheridan is the man behind “Yellowstone” but he’s spending more time in front of the camera this season. His character, Travis Wheatley, is a tough-talking horse expert with little time for nonsense. He’s already appeared in several episodes this season but his most expansive appearance came Sunday night. He was a featured storyline in the fourth episode of the fourth season as he bonds with the recently exiled Jimmy. Wheatly is to take Jimmy to the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas after John Dutton dismisses him from “Yellowstone” Ranch. Dutton tells Jimmy that he can come back to “Yellowstone” when he is ready and encourages him to take advantage of this opportunity. Dutton tells him pretty sternly that this is the last favor he will call in for him and he’s on his own if he screws up.

The drive from Montana to Texas is a long one but Jimmy and Travis form a solid bond on the way there. Declaring “Roadhouse” to be the greatest movie ever made, Sheridan’s character sneaks the mention of an “1883” star.

“When I grow up I want to be Sam Elliott with Patrick Swayze’s hair,” Travis says to Jimmy. “Man, I wish the mullet would come back in style, don’t you?”

Elliott, a household name to fans of Westerns, will play a leading role in the “Yellowstone” spinoff “1883,” which is due out next month. Getting Sam Elliott’s name into the conversation is very clever of Taylor Sheridan and makes for a nice “1883” plug. Filming for the “Yellowstone” prequel is going well and we’ll get our first glimpse on December 19. Fans can’t wait to see what Sheridan has cooked up.

‘Yellowstone’ Fans Singing Praises of Taylor Sheridan

The fourth season of “Yellowstone” is off to a tremendous start and fans are loving every second of it. Much of the credit goes to Sheridan and the show’s fantastic writers. We are only four episodes deep into the new season but we’ve already seen numerous exciting storylines take off.

The season’s opening scene was a shot of pure adrenaline that included an intense shoot-off scene that fans are still talking about. We also learn the fates of the three Dutton family members that were ambushed at the end of the previous season. John, Kayce and Beth Dutton all survived the attempt on their lives but suffered serious injury.

The biggest question, however, of “Yellowstone” season four still remains. Who ordered the attacks on the Duttons? It’s the biggest question on the minds of the show’s robust fan base.

Hopefully, we’ll get closer to an answer with the next episode, set for this Sunday.
