‘Yellowstone’ Drops Eerie New John Dutton Quote Ahead of Episode 4

The official Yellowstone Twitter account has dropped an ominous new John Dutton (Kevin Costner) quote right before Episode 4 of Season 4 airs. And it raises questions about the enormity of the fight the Duttons have taken on.

“Our cemetery may be by the river, son, but make no mistake: this is our graveyard,” Dutton tells his son Kayce (Luke Grimes).

Will John Dutton Survive Season 4?

In previous seasons of Yellowstone, John has faced down cancer, an ulcer, the murderous Beck Brothers (Terry Serpico and Neal McDonough) and a violent militia. But in taking on hedge fund Market Equities, has he met a threat that’s too big to defeat?

Perhaps John suspects as much. Or maybe he’s just determined to live out the rest of his life on his ranch, on his terms, and that’s what his comment to Kayce means. Either way, fans will soon find out.

It’s unlikely that Costner, who also serves as an executive producer on the show, would exit quite so early as Season 4. (Series co-creator Taylor Sheridan has said he expects that Yellowstone will run for six seasons.) And Costner’s character is unquestionably a fan favorite.

Moreover, lately Kayce has been doing most of the dangerous work. Aside from disposing of the loudmouthed casino gambler who helped put the attackers together – and John did that in his signature style, which was not without risks – most of the retaliatory hits have been carried out by Kayce himself, along with sheriff’s deputies. So it’s worth asking why John, who’s been safely overseeing the revenge plan from the ranch, would be contemplating his mortality now.

Costner Offers No Spoilers as to Where Yellowstone Is Heading

Meanwhile, Costner has been pretty disciplined about spoilers. In interviews and social media posts, he has carefully avoided tipping his hand as to what he knows about John’s future.

In an interview with Good Day New York last December, Costner declined to share what happened next for the Duttons or to say if his character survives when asked.

“I can’t say,” Costner replied. “There’s an ending that you’re gonna see. Hopefully it’s a powerful one for you.”

“Listen, I try to make things and be a part of things that have a dramatic arc to them,” he added. “Just try to enjoy it right up to the end if you can.”

Fans are clearly pulling for John Dutton, though he’s a complex character who transcends simplistic notions of good and evil.
