‘Yellowstone’ Episode 3 Features Cameo from a Former ‘Gunsmoke’ Star

A former star on the CBS classic western Gunsmoke happened to make a cameo appearance on Sunday night’s new Yellowstone episode.

Buck Taylor, who played Newly O’Brien alongside James Arness, popped up on TV screens as Emmett Walsh. He is a land owner that works near the Yellowstone ranch.

The Yellowstone Twitter account sent out this to its fans on Sunday night. In the scene, he’s chatting with Kacey Dutton, played by Luke Grimes.

He played Newly from 1967-76 on Gunsmoke. Taylor’s character arrives in Dodge City as a gunsmith who later becomes a deputy marshal.

Taylor also has a family tie to show business. His father was Dub Taylor, who was a character actor in movies and TV shows.

These days, Taylor is 83 years old and still goes around to art shows and western-themed gatherings.

Yellowstone is just another show in which Taylor has a chance to show off his acting abilities.

Another movie from his career was a man at odds with his life in Truce.

The film was released in 2003. Taylor plays Harry Dodds, who is a rancher trying to keep his ranch alive while dealing with his granddaughter. Samantha Droke plays Jenny.

He did either in guest-star or cast roles. Those shows include “Death Falley Days,” “Barnaby Jones,” “The Sacketts,” “Matt Houston,” “T.J. Hooker,” “Dallas,” “Knots Landing,” and “Walker, Texas Ranger.”

It’s true: Yellowstone‘s Season 4 return on Paramount Network broke multiple records.

That show even smashed records held by Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

Numbers released by Deadline cite Taylor Sheridan’s flagship series drawing a remarkable 8 million total viewers the night of Nov. 7, 2021.

That comes from live cable television, online cable streaming, and same day streaming services. In fact, Season 4’s premiere viewership was up a staggering 104% over Season 3’s 2020 premiere of 4.2 million viewers.

What a sweet number to see for Kevin Costner, Sheridan, and the entire cast of the show.
