On “Yellowstone,” Garrett Randall (Will Patton) cuts a sinister figure. Jamie Dutton’s (Wes Bentley) biological father is a murderer who seems completely unrepentant about what he’s done. And Jamie’s belated arrival on his doorstep apparently only serves as vindication to the old man.
But now “Yellowstone” fans have hatched a theory that Randall is not, in fact, Jamie’s father. After all, he doesn’t look like his supposed son. The son has a full head of dark hair and chiseled features; the father has thinning sandy hair and pale skin.
What if, one fan wondered, Jamie’s biological father was a Native American, and Randall, upon seeing the infant, realized the boy was not his and beat his wife to death in a fit of rage?
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Leery About Theory
Many “Yellowstone” fans on Reddit threw cold water on the idea that Jamie is part Native American. They pointed out that Jamie himself is very fair. But they agreed that the disparity between his and his father’s features needs to be explained.
“Jamie is not Native American or even part Native American,” another fan insisted. “I think we’ve been waiting for Season 4 for so long that we can’t help but make up our own storylines. I don’t think we should assume there was any relationship between the Duttons and Jamie’s mother either.”
On that last point, there was some disagreement. Other fans pointed out that John Dutton (Kevin Costner) told Jamie that he and Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) had tried to talk Jamie’s mother out of marrying his father. They would not have cared or known enough to intervene with a stranger. So there must have been some relationship. But what?
Fans have speculated that Jamie’s mother may have worked on the ranch. Or maybe she was related to the Duttons through some genealogical thread. In any event, they clearly cared enough to spend considerable time and expense on the woman’s son.
Jamie Has a Choice to Make
In Season 4, Jamie will face a choice between his biological father and his adoptive one. With Randall urging Jamie to dispatch Dutton and take his ranch in cold blood, and Dutton insisting on continuing to call Jamie “son,” Jamie, who is not exactly known for his strong spine, will have to pick a side.
Thus far, he has treated Randall like a confidant, opening up to the man who sensed merely by looking at Jamie that he had already killed someone. But will Randall cross a line that Jamie can’t abide by?
Fans have just over a month to go before they find out. The two-hour Season 4 premiere airs on Sunday, Nov. 7 on the Paramount Network. Watch the trailer here.
