The reference took place at the end of the episode after Jimmy (Jefferson White) met one of the cowboys of the Four-Sixes Ranch. He slept on a bench and woke up next to two older cowpokes talking about a kind of horse, and Jimmy kind of disregards them to go find a group of younger-looking cowboys in their chaps.
The foreman comes out to meet Jimmy and asks if he’s ready to go to work. He also hopes Jimmy soaked up some knowledge from the old cowboys in the barn.
When Jimmy’s confused, the foreman says, “There’s three gods in Texas: the Almighty himself, Buster Welch, and George Strait. You just met one of them.”
The Yellowstone ranch hand makes an absolute fool of himself when he says, “That’s not George Strait.”
The foreman just looks at him and says, “I hope the Good Lord gave you a big d*** Jimmy, ’cause he sure shorted you on brains.”
Clearly, Jimmy is out of his element down here in Texas. It’s interesting to see a little bit of the Four-Sixes world when we know Taylor Sheridan is working on a sister series. “6666” should focus entirely on this new ranch (and presumably Jimmy).
But country fans certainly appreciated the George Strait reference. He is one of the greatest country singers of all time and has put out one classic after another.
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Praise Buster Welch and George Strait References
The official “Yellowstone” Twitter page put out a GIF last night featuring Buster Welch himself, who appeared in the episode on the Four-Sixes Ranch. Several fans took to the comments to praise Welch and comment on the conversation above between Jimmy and the foreman.
Twitter user David Hall said, “He was absolutely right about 3 gods in Texas! That was Buster Welch!!! What would you give to sit on that bench and just listen to those two talk horses? No replies necessary because there is no way to put a price on it.”
“Whoa, that’s not @GeorgeStrait. Loved the reference and tonight’s episode,” Teresa Austene wrote.
“Taylor is really knocking it out of the park with Buster Welch, Barry Corbin, and Buck Taylor …. WHOOO .. who’s next, I’m on the edge of my seat!” David Gould commented on the post.
Joe Pinney said, “The one and only! 93 years old and still dropping wisdom! He’s the Babe Ruth of the Cutting Horse world!”
The appearance of Buster Welch AND Barry Corbin was an absolute home run. We can’t wait to see more of them (hopefully) next week on “Yellowstone.”
