“Yellowstone” star Gil Birmingham got the chance to work with Season 4 newcomer Jacki Weaver when his character, Chief Thomas Rainwater, faced off against Weaver’s character, Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner. And he said it’s a “poker game” between the two characters.
In a new interview with TV Insider, Birmingham talked about the experience of working with Weaver, and about the dynamic between their two characters, which he said accurately portrays the way developers often try to use native peoples. It’s a poker game with the hedge fund honcho, and Rainwater is determined to win.
“What a dynamo she is. It was lovely to work with her,” Birmingham said of Weaver.
‘Yellowstone’ Star Says ‘We’ll See Who Blinks’
Rainwater recognizes Warner as a formidable opponent. She is, after all, trying to pave over the valley that he wants restored to the condition of his ancestors’ time. And he is helping to lead a class-action environmental impact lawsuit that could scuttle her airport plans. So the two soon get drawn into a high-stakes game in which neither wants to blink first.
“Right off the bat, we’re head-to-head [in] contention,” Birmingham said. “She’s trying to lure me in, as all developers do. That’s very accurate for present-day as well: people trying to define some kind of advantage or angle to be able to use native people to get a foot in or some kind of benefit or leverage.”
“Caroline’s got an agenda of her own,” he added. “So does Rainwater. It’s a game of poker, and we’ll see who blinks.”
Season 4 Promises New Challenges for the Broken Rock Chief
We already know from trailers and behind-the-scenes featurettes that Rainwater will meet with Warner in Season 4 of “Yellowstone.” And we know that Warner will walk away from one meeting muttering, “I cannot wait to pave this place over.”
But what will happen in the poker game that is their interaction? Birmingham has also hinted that Rainwater will be confronted with a moral dilemma in Season 4. Does it spring from his interactions with Warner? Or from a run-in with an even more villainous character?
In fact, Birmingham suggested to TV Insider that Rainwater knows some key bit of information about the attacks on the Dutton family. And how he uses that information will define the ethical path his character takes in Season 4.
There’s no shortage of suspense in the lead-up to the Season 4 premiere. And much of it resolves tonight at 8 p.m. ET. Don’t miss it.
