One of the highlights of Season 4 of “Yellowstone” so far has been the growing relationship between Beth Dutton and a 14-year-old orphan named Carter.

Earlier today, the show’s official Instagram account posted a clip of the first time Beth and Carter met outside the hospital. Beth was there to visit John, who was in a coma for two months after getting shot. He’d just woken up and seen Beth before the doctors put him back to sleep, pissing off Beth. She went outside to smoke a cigarette and ran into Carter sitting on the benches out there.

Carter mentioned that his own dad was dying from heroin. The two talked for a few minutes, with Beth “analyzing” his behavior and personality. She knew that he had no role model to look up to and that he wouldn’t go far in life without one.

At one point, Carter asked Beth if she’s a therapist and the “Yellowstone” character said, “I am the rock therapists break themselves against.” Another classic Beth quote.

At the end of the scene, Beth finds out that Carter’s only 14 and takes away the cigarette she’d given him. Beth isn’t normally the motherly type, but for the first time, we get a sense of her trying to let this kid be a kid for a little while longer.

The official “Yellowstone” Instagram account captioned the clip, “Talk about making a memorable first impression. #YellowstoneTV.”

We know that this does leave an impression on Carter because when he gets arrested, he tells the sheriff that Beth’s his guardian. This leads to her taking him in and a whole new slew of adventures for the two of them.

Some of Beth and Carter’s More ‘Memorable’ Moments on ‘Yellowstone’

Since the start of “Yellowstone” Season 4, we’ve seen some pretty remarkable scenes between Beth and Carter, with Rip thrown in there too.

First off, right after the scene on the hospital benches, Beth joins Carter to witness his father dying. She comforts him in the only way she can and lets him grieve in his own way. Then, when he shows up at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, she decides to take him in and give him a temporary home.

Rip, of course, wants nothing to do with him. He understands that Carter’s situation is similar to his own as a child, but he doesn’t care. That just makes him trust Carter less. Eventually, by the end of Episode 2, Rip offers Carter a job and the two go home to Beth making them a meal of Hamburger Helper (cooking isn’t exactly her forte).

During Episode 3, a super explosive moment occurs between Beth and Carter. She decides to take him shopping for new clothes, and he throws a fit at the store. They get into a verbal and physical fight, and Beth feels humiliated and embarrassed by her struggles with parenting him. On the car ride home, they have a talk about the four ways to get rich in life, and Beth emphasizes that he needs to work hard to get what he wants.

We don’t see them interact in Episode 4, but Rip tells Carter he needs to earn her trust back. Will he finally do that in Episode 5? Tune in tomorrow night at 8 p.m. EST to the Paramount Network to find out.
