Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) has been through a lot since he started out “Yellowstone” as a well-intentioned if bumbling legal eagle for the Dutton family. Then again, he’s also put the Dutton family through a lot: running a political campaign against John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) wishes, giving a damaging story on the family to a reporter, killing said reporter and forcing the family to cover it up – not to mention his decision to accept Market Equities’ offer for the Duttons’ land on behalf of the family.

In the new teaser for “Yellowstone,” Jamie appears holding a gun on someone we can’t see. We hear a gunshot, and the screen goes dark.

Could Jamie be the next season’s main villain?

Is Jamie the New ‘Yellowstone’ Villain?

As Season 3 ended, Jamie had just told Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), the Dutton family’s enforcer, not to call him anymore. That’s despite Rip being in obvious distress and describing to Jamie a worrisome situation for his adoptive family.

There have been some hints that things take a darker turn for Jamie in Season 4. In an interview last year with Entertainment Weekly, Bentley did not shoot down an interviewer’s suggestion that Jamie go “full villain” next season.

“I like how you’re thinking,” Bentley said. “I agree with that.”

He added, “I think it’s going to be a really interesting thing to see. I can’t say if it will or it won’t, but that’d be a really interesting path to take.”

It’s possible that Jamie, who has never had much of a backbone, is swayed by the words of his biological father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), who instantly sensed that Jamie had killed someone and urged him to kill again. It’s also possible that Jamie comes to see Dutton as an obstacle to his political ambitions and to his plans to inherit the ranch for his new child.

Could Jamie Turn on Randall?

But is the clip of Jamie holding a gun really damning evidence that he’s the new villain? The series of deadly attacks at the end of Season 3 seem a bit much for Jamie to have coordinated himself, especially when he was still processing the news that he was adopted and that he was about to have a child. And an earlier trailer did include a clip of a seemingly astonished Jamie saying, “Oh my God.”

Perhaps Randall goes too far in what he believes is an effort to help Jamie, and Jamie turns on him. Or perhaps there’s a new villain in Season 4, bad enough that even Jamie is moved to oppose him.

In any case, “Yellowstone” fans will soon get to find out what path Jamie takes. The two-hour Season 4 premiere drops Sunday, Nov. 7, exclusively on the Paramount Network.
