On “Yellowstone,” John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) have been engaged in a chess match since Season 1. And it’s picking up in Season 4 right where things left off.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the official “Yellowstone” Twitter account reminded fans of that fact.

“These two still have chess to play,” @Yellowstone captioned a picture of Dutton and Rainwater walking down a road in Montana.

In Episode 3, Rainwater Grudgingly Does Dutton a Favor

In Episodes 1 and 2 of the new season, we met a gambler in Rainwater’s casino who bragged about putting together the attack on Dutton and his family. Rainwater and Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) interrogated and then bound and gagged the man upon learning that he wasn’t just full of bluster.

Rainwater is convinced that whoever went after Dutton is coming for them next. So he is almost as interested as Dutton is in figuring out who was behind the attacks. The gambler at his casino was just a middleman. But that doesn’t stop Rainwater from turning the man over to Dutton. Rainwater also offers a summary of everything the man told them during several days of beatings and questioning.

The man’s story leads back to a felon who supposedly put out a hit on Dutton. But Dutton doesn’t recognize the man’s picture. And something doesn’t add up. Will Rainwater forge another temporary alliance with Dutton to figure out who really orchestrated the violence in their valley? His comments in Episode 3 suggest he’s eager to get back to that chess match. But he and Dutton have a shared objective to tackle first.

‘Yellowstone’ Season 4 Kicked Off With a Bang

Season 4 of “Yellowstone” hit the ground running, with Dutton nearly dying in the hit-and-run shooting, only to be saved by Rip (Cole Hauser) at the last minute. He emerged from a protracted hospital stay somewhat the worse for wear but determined to hunt down those responsible for the attacks on his family.

Meanwhile, Rainwater met with Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver). She is interested in getting the class-action environmental impact lawsuit dropped en route to paving over the whole valley. That hardly harmonizes with Rainwater’s vision for the valley. Will Warner somehow win him over, or will he continue to join Dutton in opposition to the hedge fund’s plans?
