Everyone’s favorite “Yellowstone” villain is sharing a bit of insight about portraying Beth Dutton and how she relates to her character. We all know we certainly do. Who doesn’t want just a shred of Beth’s confidence when it comes to confrontation? Yet Kelly Reilly says it’s about bringing the written story to life.

In an interview with Jefferson White of the Yellowstone Official Podcast, Reilly opened up about connecting to her character.

“I believe it was Meryl Streep who talks about acting like you’re playing something that is outside of you. You think that it’s something that you don’t recognize in yourself, and you’re reaching for, and you’re trying to navigate and figure out and become. But the study is actually when you start to really inhabit and become the character that you understand where your similarities actually are,” Reilly says.

“Yellowstone’s” Kelly Reilly Discusses Transforming into Beth

For so long on set, Reilly also says that she kept to herself and didn’t interact with the cast while filming. This is so she could hone her American accent and really get into the character Taylor Sheridan wrote for her.

And while Reilly portrays everything we love to hate about Beth Dutton so poetically, when she first thought about the role, she didn’t know if she’d be the right fit for the scornful Dutton daughter.

“It took me a while to really find [Beth],” said Reilly. “When I first met [Taylor Sheridan] I hadn’t found her yet, so I’m not sure what he saw. I do remember having a wobble moment where I thought ‘I’m not sure I’m gonna be able to pull this off.’ Because it is such a tremendously complicated role. I wasn’t sure if I was the right person for it.”

Reilly Gets Help From Taylor Sheridan

However, she adds that Taylor Sheridan helped her see herself as Beth along the way.

“[Taylor Sheridan] would just fill my head – he would call me up at midnight and be like ‘here’s what you need to know about Beth.’ And I have notebooks and journals, literally, I would be writing everything down that he would tell me, I still have them. Beth is Taylor’s creation, and all I ever wanted to do was show him that I could do it, and make her real for him. Because it is such a bold, brave character. So that audition, and just what he saw in me I have no idea,” Reilly continued. “But I do remember once I got it, I got it.”

And trust us, Reilly does a phenomenal job of playing Beth. She even says that fans will stop her on the street because they so desire to meet the ‘real Beth Dutton.’ If there were ever any questions in fans’ minds about who better could play Beth Dutton, that was pretty much put to bed since she stepped onscreen.
