Kevin Costner joined the NASCAR family in 2007. Is there anything the actor can’t do?

As an actor, Kevin Costner had discovered and explored all kinds of different worlds. He’s played baseball stars, baseball has-beens, and civil war soldiers. He’s gone back in time and traveled to the future. And he’s been to places all over the world. But the coolest part about his career is that his adventures don’t stop when he’s offscreen. Even off the set, Kevin gets to be a part of all kinds of worlds including the world of racing.

In 2007, Kevin Costner served as Grand Marshal of the Auto Club 500 during the West Coast premiere of NASCAR. As Grand Marshal, Kevin gave the “Gentlemen, Start your Engines” command to the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup drivers in front of the live audience and those watching at home. Additionally, Kevin got to perform live with “The Kevin Costner Band,”(now called Modern West) during the pre-race festivities.

During an interview in 2007, Gillian Zucker, president of the Auto Club Speedway at the time, talked about why Kevin was the perfect guy for the job.

“Having an academy award winner like Kevin Costner as the Grand Marshal of the Auto Club 500 solidifies Auto Club Speedway’s position as the NASCAR playground for Hollywood. And continues to demonstrate how popular NASCAR Nextel Cup racing has become,” said Zucker. “In addition to being Grand Marshal, Kevin’s live performance at Auto Club Speedway is truly unique. And an exclusive opportunity for our fans to get to know his musical side.”

Kevin Costner Narrated the Documentary About NASCAR King Richard Petty

Kevin Costner must have caught the NASCAR bug in 2007. Three years after his time as Grand Marshall, he returned to the sport. But his next appearance wasn’t as flashy as his previous stint. Instead, Coster stayed behind the camera. He narrated the 2010 documentary Petty Blue about legendary driver Richard Petty.

Richard Petty is a former stock car racing driver who raced from 1958 to 1992. He raced in the former NASCAR Grand National and Winston Cup Series – now it’s called the NASCAR Cup Series. He was the first driver to win the Cup Series championship seven times. The record is now tied with Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson. He also won a record 200 career races. The documentary depicts the life and success of Petty, nicknamed “The King.” The film shows the history behind Richard Petty Motorsports. And it also highlights the Petty family’s involvement with auto racing from the very beginning.
