‘Yellowstone’ TV: Kevin Costner Went Behind-the-Scenes on ‘Bull Poker’ Game from Season 1 in 2019 Interview

by Thad Mitchell

In a famous scene from an earlier season of Yellowstone, the ranch hands gather to play a round of “Bull Poker.”

Bull Poker is much the same as regular poker except with one huge difference — there is a bull involved. The object of the game is to play a regular game of poker in an arena while a bucking bull roams around. Cowboys play their poker game until the Bull decides it is ready to attack. Once the bull goes on the offensive, it is every man for himself in a game of survival.

At the suggestion of one of the ranch hands, the Yellowstone Cowboys decide to partake in the game of chance. They gather inside a dirt ring for a few hands before the bull is released. Bunkhouse house boss Rip Wheeler intervenes before any of the ranch hands get severely hurt.

Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner Actor Explains Concept of ‘Bull Poker’

In a 2019 interview with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, Yellowstone star Kevin Costner takes fans behind the scenes of Bull Poker. Costner’s character, John Dutton, is not directly involved in the Bull Poker match but Costner was on hand to see it unfold.

“It’s looney,” Costner says of the dangerous sport. “And there is always drinking involved with stuff like this…there would just have to be. This bull actually picks someone and just destroys them. I’ve never seen the fun in it, but from 40 yards away it looks funny.”

Kimmel then goes on to explain the finer points of Bull Poker, explaining the winner is the one with the best hand when the bull attacks.

“Well nobody wins,” Costner says to a roar of laughter from the live audience. “A guy says ‘I won’ but I mean really?”

While Bull Poker may not factor into Yellowstone’s future scripts, Costner and his character certainly are. John Dutton ends season three on a sour note as he is attacked while trying to help a family change a tire. He is shot several times in the chest before the ambusher drives away. Fans believe Dutton survives the attack thanks to a well-placed cell phone in his shirt pocket.

With season four growing closer by the day, Yellowstone fans won’t have to wait much longer for answers.
