In the new trailer from “Yellowstone,” we catch a brief glimpse of Lloyd (Forrie J. Smith) getting punched out by someone. Based on freeze-frame stills of the scene, many fans believe it’s Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) doing the punching.

But why would Rip do that? Lloyd has thus far been a loyal ranch hand who gets stuff done around the Dutton Ranch.

You can watch the brief moment from the trailer yourself here (at 0:49):

‘Yellowstone’ Fans Are Speculating About Rip-Lloyd Showdown

Lloyd is a pretty canny ranch hand, not often caught off-guard and usually able to anticipate trouble. Given that, who might catch him with his guard down enough to get a punch in? Rip seems a likely candidate.

Some fans have speculated that it was Lloyd encouraging Jimmy’s (Jefferson White) rodeo dreams that provoked Rip. But punching Lloyd out seems a bit excessive for something that was, after all, ultimately Jimmy’s decision.

So now fans have hit on another theory. And it involves the wayward former ranch hand Wade Morrow (Boots Southerland).

On Reddit, a group of fans has been debating the theory that the two were fighting over Wade’s death at the hands of the Dutton Ranch hands, led by Rip.

Wade was a former Dutton Ranch hand himself. While his betrayal of the ranch was ancient history, when he showed up again in Season 3 in the employ of Market Equities’ Roarke (Josh Holloway), Dutton’s enemy, it infuriated John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and led to Wade’s excruciating demise.

Some fans are speculating that Lloyd questioned the brutality of the killing (the ranch hands strung Wade up from a tree and cut his skin off). Wade was, after all, a former ranch hand that Lloyd himself had known. And any direct questioning of Rip’s authority certainly could move Rip to violence.

It will be interesting to see who it is that punches out Lloyd, and if it is Rip, what could have possibly motivated him to do so.

Season 4 Is Almost Here

The ”Yellowstone” Season 4 premiere drops Sunday, Nov. 7 on the Paramount Network. With little more than a month to go until the premiere date, many fans are re-engaging with the series after its long hiatus.

The show’s social accounts have certainly helped with that, releasing trailers and teasers at a faster clip as the premiere approaches. It seems to have mollified fans who were bent out of shape about the delay (previous seasons have premiered in June, and most expected this one to do so, too).

Moreover, after the Season 3 finale cliffhanger, many fans are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out if their favorite characters survive. It promises to be a gripping two-hour premiere, so don’t forget to tune in.
