‘Yellowstone’ Reminds Everyone It’s Impossible to Be Cooler Than Kevin Costner

As the top scripted drama on cable, Yellowstone is pretty cool. But no one is cooler than Kevin Costner. And the show reminded fans of that on Friday with a stylish tweet.

“If only we could be this cool,” @Yellowstone tweeted. The show included a photo of Costner lounging on the steps of the Chief Joseph Ranch in costume as John Dutton and tagged Costner’s Twitter account.

Yellowstone Star Knows He Looks Better in Jeans Than a Suit

Costner is just not much of a suit-and-tie kind of guy. And at 66, he knows what he’s comfortable in. The actor says he feels – and looks – much better in jeans and cowboy boots, outdoors somewhere, than he does in a courtroom in a suit and tie. Besides, ever since he was a kid, he’s hated wearing ties.

“Even when I wore Giorgio Armani in The Untouchables, I never felt like I looked good in suits,” Costner explained in a Q&A last year, per Deadline. “I felt like they got me in trouble. And you know, it just goes to show the things you carry forward in your life. You know, my wife is going, now, ‘You look fine.’ And I go, ‘No, I don’t.’ These other guys look good in suits. I don’t.”

“There’s something about being out in nature, being on a horse, looking at the country in a moment when it was almost a Garden of Eden, when there was nothing there,” he added. “And that’s what we have in Yellowstone.”

Stylistically, John Dutton is an ideal role for the Oscar-winning actor and director. His gruff, driven portrayal of the family patriarch has drawn rave reviews from Yellowstone fans.

Costner Almost Backed Out of the Show

But Yellowstone nearly lost its center when Costner, who had been told the show would run for just one season, contemplated backing out when faced with the prospect of more. It’s tough to imagine Yellowstone without the star and executive producer, but that was a real, if fleeting, possibility.

“I had a decision to make because it wasn’t how it was pitched to me, and I thought, well, I could bail on this. I had a real moment, and everybody out there has them too, where you go ‘Oh’ — you thought you were doing one thing, and now I might be staring at something else,” Costner said in the Q&A.

Ultimately, Costner decided to go with it, for reasons he prefers to keep to himself. But once he made that decision, he committed.

“There’s no difference between a movie and this for me,” he added.

Don’t miss Costner’s cool outfits and finely-tuned portrayal of John Dutton, along with the rest of the excellent cast, Sundays at 8 p.m. ET on the Paramount Network.
