The Yellowstone official season 4 trailer just dropped and everyone, fans and cast alike, is excited. Brecken Merrill, in particular, who plays Tate Dutton on the show, is pumped for season 4; he posted the trailer on Instagram with the caption “Let’s gooooooo!”
Child stars are interesting; on one hand, the 12-year-old actor probably shouldn’t be watching the show he’s on. On the other hand, he’s most likely proud of the work he’s done, and it’s not like Tate hasn’t gotten into some scrapes of his own throughout Yellowstone’s 3 seasons.
Brecken Merrill’s Perils on ‘Yellowstone’
Tate Dutton, the only son of Kayce and Monica Dutton, knows a bit about peril. With all that’s happened in his family, he’s probably had to grow up fast; there’s no time to be a carefree kid when your uncles are murdering each other, your aunt’s getting blown up, and your granddad gets shot in the middle of the road.
But, while Tate hasn’t particularly witnessed those things, he has to know that life on the ranch is dangerous in its own right. He’s gotten into his own share of troubles along the way; once, he was attacked by a rattlesnake as he waited in a culvert for his father to come back after catching a few child abductors. So, he already had to deal with finding a girl kidnapped in a van. But, when Kayce got back, Tate had killed the snake and protected himself.
Another time, he fell into a river and John Dutton jumped in to save him. In addition, he witnessed his mother having an epidural hematoma in the school yard. Malcolm and Teal Beck also kidnapped him when the rivalry between the Duttons and the Becks got out of hand. The Duttons and their ranch hands made swift work of the Becks and the white supremacists they’d hired to kidnap Tate; but not without carnage. When Kayce rescued Tate, the boy didn’t recognize his father, and wouldn’t stop screaming. Stuff like this hardens a kid, and, in the case of the kidnapping, psychologically damages them.
What’s Next for Tate Dutton?
With no mention of Tate in the new trailer, and with the violence ramping up on the show, it’s easy to assume that he’s going to be taken to a safe house somewhere and hidden away. That’s the logical solution, anyway. Who knows how much of Tate we’re going to see in season 4? Brecken Merrill still seems to be a regular on set, if his Instagram posts are anything to go by.
Tate has already gone through so much on Yellowstone, it’ll be interesting to see how these incidents affect him as he gets older; especially the kidnapping. Even though he’s gone through all these things in filming, Brecken Merrill is a phenomenal actor; he knows how to separate film from reality, because he still seems to be a happy-go-lucky 12-year-old. It’ll be exciting to watch Tate grow up before our eyes on Yellowstone, and watch Brecken Merrill become an even more accomplished actor.
