‘Yellowstone’ Star Cole Hauser Opens Up About Playing Rip Wheeler’s Many Different Colors

If you know anything about Rip Wheeler in the hit show Yellowstone, it’s that he is a man of many different colors.

If you are all caught up on Season 4 of Yellowstone, then there is a good chance that Rip Wheeler is your favorite character, or he’s at least one of them. Wheeler is played by actor Cole Hauser. He’s a ranch hand at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He even made an appearance in the show’s very first episode titled, “Daybreak”, back in 2018. Hauser stars alongside the likes of other big names like Kevin Costner (John Dutton) and Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton).

If you are one of the folks who just started the series, there is one easy way to recognize Rip. Just look out for his signature black jacket, his cowboy hat, silk scarf, and black gloves. Rip is somewhat of the personal brute for the Dutton family, and he’s always there when they need him. There is no doubt that he is one of the best characters on the show.

More to Rip Wheeler on ‘Yellowstone’ Than You Think

Even though the character of Rip Wheeler is definitely rough around the edges, there is actually a lot more to him than you may think. Viewers of the show come to find out in the first season that Wheeler was orphaned at a young age. And that it was actually John Dutton who rescued him from the deadly home.

Not only does Rip carry with him that childhood trauma as a part of his big bad wolf mentality, but he also has a soft spot for Beth Dutton. There has definitely been an attraction between the two ever since he started to live on the Ranch in the 90s and there still is to this day. As a matter of fact, the two wound up getting engaged.

It’s easy to tell that Cole Hauser loves playing Rip Wheeler on Yellowstone. The star actor recently sat down with ET Online for an exclusive interview to explain the different colors of his character.

“The great thing about Rip is that there are a ton of different colors that Taylor [Sheridan] has allowed me to play,” he explained. “Obviously, there’s the dark side of him. The love, the romance, the passion, the friendship, the loyalty.”

If you ask Hauser, playing Rip Wheeler in Yellowstone has been the perfect scenario.

“All of it is just what you dream about as an actor. So, I have been very fortunate in that way.”
