On “Yellowstone,” Chief Thomas Rainwater actor Gil Birmingham portrays Rainwater as a sort of frenemy to John Dutton (Kevin Costner). The two former antagonists forged an alliance of convenience in Season 2. But what’s in store for the uneasy allies in Season 4?
In an exclusive interview with Looper, Birmingham dished on Rainwater’s Season 4 trajectory and what it’s like working with executive producer and co-star Costner.
“He’s a lovely, lovely man,” Birmingham said of Costner. “I don’t really have enough scenes with him, in my estimation. But we have a mysterious type of distancing, although we ally ourselves. And then we encounter external sources coming in that we may join forces with, or we may help each other with. But it’s all generally in respect to how we can keep this land undeveloped.”
‘Yellowstone’ Star Teases Season 4 Developments
In the Looper interview, Birmingham also teased some Season 4 plot developments. He foreshadowed a fateful decision that awaits the Broken Rock chief next season. How far will Rainwater go to reclaim the land where the Dutton Ranch sits, in the valley that once belonged to his tribe?
“Thomas Rainwater will be challenged with some gray areas, in terms of a moral decision that has to be made,” Birmingham said. “And in trying to stay focused on finding alliances that can help him achieve his goal of acquiring the land back. We also get to dig into some cultural ceremony of healing that I hope the public will enjoy and get informed by.”
Whose healing is depicted Birmingham did not say. But as previous episodes of “Yellowstone” have done, it sounds like this season promises to educate viewers on contemporary Native American culture.
Moreover, Birmingham hinted that all of the characters will face new hurdles in Season 4, with none of them remaining unchanged by their respective ordeals. Will it be the best season yet? Watch and see.
Season 4 Is Two Days Away
The Season 4 premiere drops on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. ET. Many “Yellowstone” fans have already blocked out that time slot and narrowed down their catering options.
Many questions linger after the Season 3 finale cliffhanger. Will Rainwater listen to Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher)? In the finale, she urged him to turn on Dutton in Dutton’s moment of weakness and take back the land by force. Or will he take a more prudent route?
As the various trailers have already shown, Rainwater will meet with Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner (Jacki Weaver) in Season 4. Maybe he will betray the class-action lawsuit against the hedge fund to forge an alliance with Warner. Maybe he won’t. Either way, fans will soon find out.
