‘Yellowstone’ Star Kelly Reilly Remembers Sprinting Towards Wolf Pack in ‘Pretty Terrifying’ Scene

by Chris Haney

During the debut season of Yellowstone, beloved couple Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler went on a date that was unique, to say the least. The pair ventured out onto the ranch at night, got drunk, and watched a pack of wolves feast on an elk. In fact, Beth hops out of the car and runs toward the wolves screaming at the top of her lungs as they ate their freshly killed meal. Not exactly your typical date night, but fans of the hit Paramount series know that Rip and Beth aren’t your typical couple.

What fans may not know about the famous scene is that Beth actress Kelly Reilly really did run towards real-life wolves. There were some safety precautions in place, but if the pack of wolves turned on her, she could’ve been in big trouble. The British actress recently opened up about the “terrifying” experience working with the wild animals while in Las Vegas for the launch of the official Yellowstone podcast.

“I’m like, well, don’t you think their most inner instincts might come out when there’s a woman with a bottle of whiskey running up to them?” Reilly recalled telling the crew. “They were like, ‘Don’t worry, we’ve got these like invisible pieces of cord, so if they do run at you, that will trip them up.'”

The 44-year-old actress couldn’t even see the cord. She said it wasn’t a comforting feeling since she wasn’t exactly confident a thin cord would stop a dozen full-grown wolves.

“That’s not going to stop a wolf, let alone his 12 mates,” she added. “But, we went for it and it was pretty terrifying I have to say. I’m in the middle of Montana and I’m running directly at a bunch of wolves.”

“I’m really brave,” the Yellowstone star joked.

‘Yellowstone’ Actress Wants to Avoid ‘Badly Written Beths’

Even if you’ve never watched Yellowstone, our previous description of Beth and Rip’s famous date scene should give you an idea of how unique Kelly Reilly’s character truly is. Showrunner Taylor Sheridan created one of television’s most fiery, foul-mouthed, witty, and determined female roles ever.

As much as she loves the character, and getting to portray the multilayered Beth Dutton, Reilly is hesitant to play similar roles. The idea doesn’t appeal to her since she isn’t looking to get typecast when searching for future acting jobs.

“Obviously, I play Beth and people like it. So, I’m inundated with very feisty, strong, violent-type women. I don’t want to play that again, those badly written Beths,” the Yellowstone star explained. “So, I stay away from them and instead am looking for the next role that takes me into different waters.”

“I don’t know what it is. I do a lot of work in Europe, obviously, as I’m from here. I’m in London right now. So, I just want to keep myself engaged and excited about the work I’m doing. I never really know what that is until I read it,” Reilly added.
