‘Yellowstone’ Star Kelly Reilly Talks Developing Beth Dutton’s Accent

“Yellowstone” star Kelly Reilly recently sat down to discuss her absolute “beast” of a character, Beth Dutton. In the interview, Reilly is asked about her accent, and how she developed Beth’s voice; an interesting subject, because Reilly is from the United Kingdom.

When asked about her accent, Reilly tells Entertainment Tonight, “Well, I work with a dialect coach who helps me and that’s just a bit of hard ground, just sitting home just going over and over and over it. I live in America now so I’m hearing it all the time.”

Through living in the U.S., she’s immersed in the accent and can practice all the time. But, she also spoke about a time where, at first, she didn’t hang out with anyone on set. “The first season when I first played Beth I didn’t want anyone to know that I wasn’t American […] and it’s not that I stayed in an accent but I just didn’t talk to anyone unless I was playing Beth.”

Kelly Reilly works so hard to create Beth Dutton, she says in the interview that Beth is one of the most difficult characters she’s ever played. She’s never portrayed someone like Beth before, but she does it extremely well.

So many fans consider Beth one of the most important elements of the show, right up there with John Dutton. If anything happens to Beth, we can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that fans will be devastated. But, in the world Beth lives in, the kind of company she keeps, and the number of lives she’s ruined, there’s no telling what’s in store for her.

Kelly Reilly Reveals One Reason Beth Would Stay at the Ranch

In a conversation with TV Insider recently, Kelly Reilly spoke about her character’s position at the end of episode 9. Beth had just been dismissed from the ranch by her father, something that has never happened to her before. He’s never shown disappointment in her, but she went too far in her dealings with Summer Higgins.

Now, Beth is facing her father’s indifference, and it’s possible she has nowhere to turn to after this. But, Reilly spoke about the one thing that could keep her at the ranch.

“If there’s going to be a reason for her to stay after this,” said Reilly, “it’s going to be because of Rip.”

Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton have been close since they were kids, but got engaged at the end of season 3. Beth is the rock that all the Dutton enemies crash against, but she needs something to crash against as well; for her, that’s Rip. Around Rip, Beth can finally relax, and put her claws away. It makes sense that she wouldn’t just leave him.
