The multi-talented Yellowstone legend has passed his gifts onto his daughters, with Lily Costner appearing on their new album with a co-writing credit.

“My function in the band is I break all the ties… Hopefully, that means the cream gets to the top,” Costner begins for his exclusive post-Ryman interview for EXTRA. He’s just finished up an incredible live performance at the Mother Church of Music in Nashville, Tennessee with his band: Kevin Costner and the Modern West.

However, “That usually means most of my songs don’t make it,” he jokes. A team of songwriters is always better than one, though, right? Especially if one is your own daughter.

According to the trade, Costner’s daughter Lily has a credit on their latest album. Lily Costner co-wrote the track “Heaven’s Gate” with her famous father. And according to the proud Yellowstone dad, she’s an absolutely “incredible songwriter.”

“She’s just like this hidden person that just stays in the corner,” he says of her talent. That trademark unassuming magnetism must run in the family.

‘Extra’s’ Alecia Davis catches up with Kevin Costner backstage at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee! Kevin dishes on Season 4 of ‘Yellowstone,’ plus his band Modern West’s conceptual album ‘Tales from Yellowstone,’ which was inspired by the show. Kevin also talks about touring and his family’s plans for Halloween! Plus, would Kevin ever do a Christmas movie?

Is ‘Yellowstone’ in the Future for Kevin Costner’s Children?

Alongside songwriting, is there a chance we could see one of the Costner daughters (or sons) on the show in the future?

“Grace could probably act because she acts every night… She tries to be the boss of me,” he offers tongue-in-cheek.

He’s mum on all things Yellowstone, however. With Season 4 right around the corner, fans were hoping for a bit more insight. Yet Costner is all about keeping the suspense in place for what is sure to be a raucous ride.

Wife Christine Baumgartner is having a raucous ride of her own, too, Costner says. She’s currently “pulling the wagon” with their children in tow as he tours for several weeks straight.

There will be breaks for Halloween, though. Costner wasn’t big on the holiday himself as a kid, he notes, but Christine and their children are really “into dressing up,” with “elaborate costumes” involved. At least one member of the Costner family will be an impressive Scarecrow come October 31.

Yet as passive as the Yellowstone icon is on Halloween himself, he seems a bit more eager to make a “classic” holiday movie. A Christmas feature, specifically.

“If I do one, I want it to be classic… That’s a difficult one to come upon… Someone is gonna have to write something that elevates itself, and if it does, I’ll do it,” he concludes.

Yellowstone returns for Season 4 with a two-episode premiere come November 7 on Paramount Network/Paramount+.
