‘Yellowstone’ Star Kevin Costner Talks John Dutton’s New Direction for Ranch

by John Jamison

Whether or not Market Equities was behind the ambush on the Dutton family remains to be seen. What we do know is the fortune 500 real estate corporation, led by Jacki Weaver’s Caroline Warner, is easily the biggest threat to the Yellowstone’s existence. And how does one fight a corporation? With money, of course. Kevin Costner discussed the reasoning behind John Dutton’s new direction in an installment of Yellowstone: Behind the Story.

“Phantom Pain,” the second episode of Yellowstone Season 4, left us with a sense of John Dutton’s long-term survival plan. That plan revolved around world-class horse trainer and rodeo champion Travis Wheatley. And we know you Outsiders were delighted as we were to get the man, the myth Taylor Sheridan more involved as an actor on the show.

Lest we forget, the Yellowstone creator and writer has been acting since the mid-1990s. And the character he plays on his own show will be instrumental in John Dutton’s plan.

And that plan is an ambitious one, to say the least. Kevin Costner’s patriarch wants the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to become a globally-recognized brand. “When people think of horses, I want them to think of the Yellowstone,” he said.

Why? Because it’s high time his family’s ranch became too big to fail. John Dutton recognizes that threats like the Beck brothers and Market Equities aren’t going to stop coming. The Yellowstone needs to be unquestionably and unwaveringly a Dutton institution for generations to come. He made a promise, after all.

Kevin Costner explained the logic behind the ranch’s new direction.

“John is land rich and not cash rich. Where is the stream of revenue going to come from? He understands how Travis is going to work, and John makes the final decision on what we’re going to buy,” said Costner.

Where Will Kayce Dutton Factor into John Dutton’s Plans in Season 4 of ‘Yellowstone’?

Kayce is easily the most valuable asset John Dutton has when it comes to vengeance. The Luke Grimes character is a former U.S. Navy SEAL with combat experience, and the man is an absolute machine. He also made a living breaking horses, but something tells us Kayce isn’t going on the road with Travis. Let’s leave that to Jimmy.

The opening moments of Yellowstone Season 4 saw Kayce’s experience as an operator on full display. The sequence happened to be a favorite of Jimmy Hurdstrom actor Jefferson White.

“One of my favorite things about that opening sequence is finally seeing Kayce, like, switch. We’ve sort of seen these flashes of him, of his past, for the last three seasons. And in that moment, for the first time, he sort of takes off any filter and just, like, brings the war to Montana,” said White.
