On “Yellowstone,” it’s still a bit of a mystery why the Duttons decided to adopt Jamie Randall (Wes Bentley) as an infant. And as Jamie grows into more of a threat than an asset to John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) plans, the questions surrounding Jamie’s adoption become ever more relevant.
What prompted John and Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) to take in Jamie after his biological father killed his biological mother? Did they know the full extent of Jamie’s mother’s drug problems? Or that his father was responsible for her death? And did John ever plan to tell Jamie he was adopted?
Luckily, “Yellowstone” fans are on it. In a new Reddit thread, fans debated the possible reasons for Jamie’s adoption and how they might change Dutton family dynamics in the future.
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Consider New Theory About Jamie’s Adoption
One fan kicked off the thread by floating the possibility that Jamie’s biological mother was Evelyn’s sister. After all, there is clearly some backstory there.
“John told Jamie that ‘we’ (meaning he and his wife Evelyn) tried to talk Jamie’s mother out of marrying Randall, but she was in love and wouldn’t listen,” the fan posted. “It seems odd that a couple with the social standing of the Duttons would be that closely involved with simply a casual neighbor or friend.”
Other fans chimed in to agree. And some suggested that Jamie’s father may have lied in his account of why he killed Jamie’s mother.
“I also think the picture Randall painted of Jamie’s mother is untrue,” another fan suggested. “I just think he wanted Jamie to look at him as he was the one who saved him If Jamie’s mother was strungout Jackie I think the Dutton would have stepped in earlier to protect Jamie.”
But others pointed out some flaws in the theory. For example, the Duttons are a prominent local family, with John Dutton, as livestock commissioner, effectively a public figure. If Dutton’s sister-in-law was brutally murdered, it would have been impossible to keep that quiet and the local newspapers would have had a field day.
Meanwhile, another fan argued that Jamie’s mother could also have been John’s sister. That wouldn’t necessarily explain why John was always so aloof towards Jamie, but it remains a possibility.
Slate Wiped Clean for Season 4
What will emerge about Jamie’s backstory in Season 4? Bentley was as curious as everyone else. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year, the actor confessed that after the epic Season 3 cliffhanger, he had no idea where “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan was going to take the main characters, including Jamie.
“I don’t know where Taylor is going to go from here,” Bentley said. “He gave himself the ability to go from any angle now. To restart or refresh, he definitely has left himself an open door for a lot of options. I think that’s clever. He has a plan, so I think he was ahead of it. As an audience, it feels like the board got wiped and we can write some new things on that board.”
Bentley agreed with his interviewer that there was a chance Jamie could become a full-fledged villain instead of just a black sheep, but would Jamie really turn on the only family he has ever known? “Yellowstone” fans have only to wait until November to find out.
