As Season 3 of “Yellowstone” ended, things were not looking good for Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) on the show.

He had just crossed John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) to side with Market Equities, helping them buy a slice of the ranch. Then John, Beth and Kayce Dutton sustained potentially lethal attacks. And Jamie’s birth father had just told him that as a Randall, killing was his only talent.

But was Jamie really behind the attacks? Or was he set up by the Season 3 enemies who, unlike Jamie, never hesitate to go for the jugular?

‘Yellowstone’ Fans Weigh In

On Reddit, “Yellowstone” fans debated who was really behind the attacks in the Season 3 finale. Many said it was really Roarke and Willa behind the attacks.

“I’m gonna say it was probably all Roarke,” one fan posted. “Trying to get rid of them all at once. I don’t think Jamie is to the point where he’d commit violence against them.”

“Roarke’s boss expressly told him to treat it like an oil deal in Yemen,” another fan agreed. “Obviously they coordinated the attacks.”

“I agree that Jamie isn’t to that point (with the small exception of possibly scaring Kayce),” yet another fan chimed in. “That’s why I don’t think it was him who had John shot.”

“I don’t think Jamie had anything to do with [the attack on Kayce] or any of them for that matter,” a fan pointed out. “He’s a shithead but I don’t think that would be the way he’d go about it. Plus [Kayce] is the only one who has always had his back.”

Still, another fan posted the theory that Jamie launched, if not all the attacks, at least the attack on Kayce in his office. The fan suggested that Jamie wanted to scare Kayce off and push Monica to move their family away from the ranch so Jamie can take it over.

“He wants Kayce to take his wife and kid and leave,” the fan argued.

The only problem with the theory that different antagonists orchestrated each attack is that the attacks were so coordinated, it beggars the belief that they all happened at once at that particular moment by sheer coincidence.

Kevin Costner on John’s Relationship With Jamie

In a behind-the-scenes featurette from the Paramount Network, Costner explained a bit about where John Dutton is coming from vis-à-vis, Jamie.

“It’s the most complicated relationship for me because there’s just so much emotional baggage between us,” Costner said of his character’s relationship with Jamie.

By the end of Season 3, John is furious with Jamie. But would Jamie really turn on the father who raised him and try to have him killed?

“It’s really in my mind that when my wife was alive, I treated him no different,” Costner said of John’s attitude toward Jamie. “It doesn’t mean I didn’t feel different, but I made a conscious effort to give him the same love and attention that his brother and sister did, and that had to do with my wife.”

It remains to be seen what role if any Jamie had in the Season 3 attacks. Will he go “full villain” in Season 4, as one interviewer suggested to Bentley? There’s only one way to find out.
