When “Yellowstone” returned last weekend, we finally discovered the fate of ranch hand Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White), who got thrown from a bucking horse at the end of Season 3.
Jimmy’s path hasn’t been an easy one on the show, but it’s been made even harder because of the fact that he broke John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) trust. John took Jimmy in early on during Season 1 as a favor to his grandfather, who unfortunately died in Season 2. But while Jimmy struggled to become a cowboy, he excelled at rodeoing. Until one rodeo in “Yellowstone” Season 3 nearly paralyzed him.
Here’s where John’s broken trust comes in. John promised to pay for all of Jimmy’s hospital bills from that one incident, but on the condition that Jimmy promised never to rodeo again.
However, his girlfriend, Mia (Eden Brolin), essentially gave Jimmy an ultimatum. He could either be the man she loved who rodeoed or stop rodeoing and lose her. Jimmy decided he couldn’t lose Mia, so he got back on the horse at the end of Season 3. Only for the horse to immediately throw him off and cause him to go unconscious when he hit the ground. After the “Yellowstone” Season 3 finale, we really didn’t know if Jimmy would survive to see Season 4.
He did survive, however, and had to face John when they both got discharged from the hospital. The conversation between them happened in Season 4 Episode 2, where John hammered home how much it hurt him that Jimmy broke his word.
When Jimmy begged John not to fire him, John replied, “I made a promise to your grandfather. And unlike you, I keep my word.” Ouch.
John revealed that Jimmy would be traveling with Travis to learn how to be a “real cowboy.” But if that doesn’t work, then Jimmy’s out of options.
Who is Travis on ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4?
During the two-hour “Yellowstone” Season 4 premiere last week, fans met Travis, a horse trainer from Texas. Some fans might have wondered why Travis seemed familiar until one Redditor realized that “Travis = Taylor Sheridan.”
That’s right, Outsiders. The beloved creator of “Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” and “1883” also acts and cowboys in his spare time. Sheridan will be regularly appearing in Season 4 as Travis Wheatley. He’ll be working with Jimmy and taking him down to Texas to teach him how to be a real cowboy.
Astute fans on the “Yellowstone” Reddit page pointed out how this definitely ties into “6666,” a new “Yellowstone” spin-off coming in the next year. The show will follow Travis (and now Jimmy) as they work on this ranch in Texas. We can’t wait to hear more about the coming spin-off. And if any more of our favorite stars will make an appearance on the show.
