What do you do when you’re waiting in anticipation for your favorite TV series to return? You watch, and then rewatch, and potentially rinse and repeat, when it comes to your beloved show. Like in this case, fans of “Yellowstone” are eagerly waiting for the arrival of the fourth season. But until then, these eagle-eyed viewers are picking out various clues and, well, maybe prop mishaps from the modern western series. Take the gun Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) used to defend himself against a monstrous Grizzly bear.
Rip Wheeler Shoots Bear in Self-Defense
In season 1, episode 7, “A Monster Is Among Us,” holds true to its name both figuratively and literally. In this case, Rip Wheeler is fighting the literal monster when a Grizzly bear surprises him and a pair of tourists.
John Dutton (Kevin Costner) tells his ranch hand to go in search of the bear that he encountered earlier, along with a rogue group of tourists. During Rip’s search for the animal, he stumbles across two of the same tourists hanging from a tree branch over a steep cliff. Rip comes to their rescue and lowers down a rope for them to grab onto. However, there’s a bit of a language barrier when he tries to tell them that the rope will only hold one of them at a time. One of the tourists panics and slips, falling to their death. As a result, the other one lets go and does the same.
Meanwhile, the carnivore of a creature appears, surprising Rip. He reaches for his gun in self-defense and shoots the Grizzly bear with one shot when it lunges at him.
Now if you’re like us, you think to yourself, wow – all it took was one shot to drop this 600-pound animal. As a matter of fact, other fans of the hit show thought the same. This led to a discussion on Rip’s weapon of choice.
Guesses On the Gun
One fan of “Yellowstone” posts the question about Rip Wheeler’s gun.
“Forgive my ignorance, but is this really the gun of choice to kill a bear with? Someone please educate me.”

As the saying goes, “Ask and you shall receive.” A couple of fellow fans chimed in on the Reddit chat forum.
The first answer reads, “Winchester repeaters can kill bears. Source: I play red dead.”
“Would guess it’s chambered in 45-70 gov,” another person guesses.
This chatter responds, “Most of them are 30-30 and it’s more then enough to take down a bear, I’ve shot a couple black bears with mine.”
“Interesting, that round is powerful enough to stop the bear dead in its tracks? That’s crazy impressive,” replies the original poster.
