“Yellowstone” may be a Western, but that doesn’t mean it can’t join the pantheon of epic dramas. At least, that’s what some “Yellowstone” fans seem to think.
In a post on Reddit, the fan suggested that “Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan owes a creative debt to Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather.” While some of the comparisons may seem a bit of a stretch, the fan made the case for “Yellowstone” as a Montanan version of the classic mob drama.
“This is a copy of The Godfather, it only happens in Montana instead of NYC,” the fan posted. “John is the Don, Lee is Sonny, Jamie is Fredo, and Kayce is Michael. They even copied the crazy sister, Connie with Beth. The plots lines are so similar. Lee dies early, Jamie is a basket case, and Kayce doesn’t really want to be part of the family business. Hell, Kayce’s wife, Monica is similar to Kaye. They even have a hardly seen wife and mother.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I like the show, but maybe because I am a fan of The Godfather series,” the fan added.
‘Yellowstone’ Fans Leap Into ‘Godfather’ Discussion
The thread quickly drew a lot of comments, with some “Yellowstone” fans poking holes in the theory and others chiming in to buttress it.
“Very cool! The only one that doesn’t work for me is Beth and Connie,” one fan posted. “The only thing they really have in common in being female. Also as someone else pointed out Rip= Tom Hagen to a T.”
“Connie and Beth both struggle with their role in the family, how male-dominated it is, maybe even how straightforward their brother’s roles are,” another fan wrote. “I see Beth as a modern interpretation of Connie in a lot of ways. Instead of getting married, she takes off. Her career, life away from the ranch, boyfriends, etc. are all her attempts to find some kind of control.”
Yet another fan pointed out a different similarity: the penchant for a series of hits, a burst of sequential violence, that runs through both “Yellowstone” and “The Godfather.” A fellow fan added that perhaps Kayce (Luke Grimes), the Montanan Michael, will order a string of hits to avenge the attacks on his family that ended Season 3.
“The actor who plays Rip said season 4 episode 1 could be titled ‘the wrath of rip,’” another fan posted. “So that has me DYING for season 4.”
