Season 4 of “Yellowstone” will bring some new characters. Among them is a new nemesis for the Duttons. Jacki Weaver’s Caroline Warner is the CEO of hedge fund Market Equities, which has made a play for a parcel of John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) land and wants to turn the valley into an airport.
“She has such a fire in her,” Chief Thomas Rainwater actor Gil Birmingham observed of Warner.
“Caroline has the resources to really undermine anything that we’ve tried to do,” he added of his character’s tribe’s views on the Market Equities chief. “So it does have us concerned.”
When Season 3 Left Off, Market Equities Was Facing Serious Opposition
The climactic “Yellowstone” Season 3 finale featured a showdown between Market Equities’ Roarke (Josh Holloway) and Willa (Karen Pittman) on one side, and the Duttons, Rainwater and Angela Blue Thunder (Q’orianka Kilcher) on the other.
When Roarke made his move on the slice of Dutton’s land that he’d been eyeing for his airport project, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) tried to claim the legal power to stop him. But then Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) intervened. The trained attorney pointed out that Beth had filed the paperwork in the wrong state and left him in effective control of the decision. And he accepted Roarke’s offer.
John appealed to Gov. Lynelle Perry (Wendy Moniz-Grillo), but she told him she couldn’t help him on this decision. Things were looking bleak… until Blue Thunder announced that her tribe would be filing a class-action environmental impact lawsuit to stop the project. And Rainwater encouraged the Duttons to join their lawsuit.
Does Warner have the resources to make their lawsuit go away? Is that clip of Rainwater and Warner taking a stroll a bad omen for the fragile alliance opposing the airport project? The Season 4 premiere airs Sunday, Nov. 7, so fans will soon find out.
Weaver Is Up to the Challenge of Playing a ‘Yellowstone’ Villain
Weaver, who has been nominated for two Oscars, was game for the challenge of playing Warner, despite being well aware of how poorly “Yellowstone” villains usually do against the Duttons.
“She’s a city slicker walking through fields of cowpats in designer heels and classy tailored suits. She looks out of place. But she’s terrifying,” Weaver told TV Insider recently. “She takes no prisoners, treats everyone badly – and is going to add another dimension to the huge cataclysmic drama that is the Duttons.”
She added that her character is fearless and is not about to be put off by threats. As for Weaver herself? She wasn’t too wild about the idea of getting on a horse, but fortunately, her character wouldn’t be caught dead on one, anyway. And she seems to have gotten along swimmingly with the other actors.
“I loved working with her,” Birmingham said. “She was so much fun.”
