“Yellowstone” co-creator Taylor Sheridan has inked a deal with MTV Entertainment and ViacomCBS for several “Yellowstone” spinoff series. Among those is the prequel spinoff “Y:1883.”

That spinoff is scheduled to launch later this year, Deadline reports. It focuses on the Dutton family as they make their way west across the Great Plains to the wilderness of Montana.

A Glimpse of ‘Y:1883’

Sheridan’s deal is reportedly in the nine figures and lasts for five years, multiple sources told Deadline.

Under the terms of the deal, Sheridan will churn out exclusive multi-platform content. He will create it with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, his partner for “Yellowstone.” He has to deliver five cycles of new or established series per year to the ViacomCBS brands, including Paramount Network.

“Taylor Sheridan is a visionary creative whose work has reinvented genres and amassed fan bases around the globe,” MTV Entertainment President Chris McCarthy said. “We are thrilled he calls ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment his home. We couldn’t be more excited to build upon our partnership with him, expand the Yellowstone universe and showcase Taylor’s boundless talent across all of our brands and platforms.”

“I am excited to continue the story of Yellowstone,” Sheridan said in a statement. “And thank you to Chris, Keith and David for allowing me to keep on expanding the family for the fans.”

Sheridan will executive produce “Y:1883.” Other executive producers include “Yellowstone” co-creator John Linson, Art Linson, David Glasser, David Hutkin and Bob Yari, per The Wrap.

Audiences caught a glimpse of the show in a 10-second teaser that aired during the Super Bowl on Sunday. In the teaser, a snow-swept sign reading “Y 1883” slowly comes into focus. As it does, a voice says, “I don’t care if you live or die. But should you live, you tell ’em about me.”

From Flashback to Flash Forward?

“Y:1883” reportedly tells the story of how the Duttons climbed out of poverty to become the family we know from “Yellowstone,” the owners of the largest contiguous ranch in the U.S. and a politically influential clan.

However, unlike “Yellowstone,” “Y:1883” won’t be available on cable. Fans of the show will have to buy Paramount+ to see it. And Paramount+ won’t launch until March of this year.

There’s no word yet on who appears in “Y:1883.” But it certainly presents an opportunity for some crossover episodes.

For example, “Yellowstone” features flashback scenes in which we get to see the Duttons at an earlier stage in their lives. So “Y:1883” could do flash-forwards. They could let us see how the lives of their forebears impact the Duttons in the present day.

How do the decisions their ancestors made play out over time to lead to the Duttons we see on “Yellowstone?” Does John Dutton (Kevin Costner) ever reflect on his lineage? Does the past inform the present? Dutton’s comments from the first three seasons of “Yellowstone” suggest that it does.

It remains to be seen whether Costner can be roped into guest appearances on “Y:1883.” Still, Sheridan’s involvement in both shows can’t hurt.
